Some snaps of oak tree transplanting... growing oaks from seed (acorns) was a super awesome experience! Here you can see some of their interesting germination and rooting patterns. Oaks (Quercus species) are called recalcitrant seeds because they do not survive drying or freezing and thus must be stored in certain conditions to maintain viability. Recalcitrant has become one of my favorite words lately due to its multiple meanings. Recalcitrant molecules and compounds are substances that persist in nature for a long time and are resistant to decay. This could include exceptionally woody material (high lignin content) or the more dreary chemical pollutants and toxins. There are also recalcitrant organic carbon pools of soil organic matter. While these materials don’t provide accessible nutrients to soil microorganisms or plants, they do provide a stable organic matter resource that takes centuries or even millennia to break down. Lastly, a recalcitrant person is someone who has “an obstinately uncooperative attitude toward authority or discipline” or is “out of step”.. aka a punk! I encourage you to collect and grow some recalcitrant seeds soon! Experiment by storing some in a cool, moist environment and some in a warm, dry environment... see which ones germinate. Resources for seed saving are coming soon to my new “Resources” page.Â
