I'm watching the new Amadeus and I feel like I'm going insane. The first scene in the flashback is Joseph II telling Salieri to make an Italian translation of his opera Tarare. It's kinda beaten into you how old and irrelevant this opera is to everyone, and how silly it is to be redoing it. Like, even Salieri's like "b-but sirr!!! I wanna write something new!!! π". Salieri tells Caterina about it and shes like "Tarare?? π€¨ that old thing???", Mozart makes digs at him like "just like you are stuck rehashing boring old operas doesnt mean i have to be π", and then you can see this sign being like "Now rehearsing: Tarare" outside the theater and I'm starting to think that the writers dont know that Axur and Tarare are different...
But do you wanna know the weirdest part?? It is blatantly stated that these scenes all take place in 1781. Salieri is "rehashing" an old opera that DOESN'T EXIST YET.
