This is such a stupid complaint, but my biggest pet peeve for Amadeus costuming is when Salieri is put in just the most bland straight black costumes. I understand the need to set him apart from Mozart with contrast to his usual pastels, but I'm very sure you can find a less dull and unoriginal way to do that! I understand most of these productions are on budgets, but any other color can't be that expensive. I just can't understand the need to put your lead in straight black.

To be completely honest, though, my biggest greif with this is just that it's clearly taken from the movie. I believe PART of this comes from productions wanting to give their audiences a familiar Salieri, so they just pick from the most recognizable Salieri.

Because of this, you'll find many men online playing Salieri in a (more affordable) nearly perfect copy of this exact look. Even including his very natural looking brown wig.

It's just a bit sad to see when Salieris were much more colorful before the movie:

I do understand that this is not just from the movie. In the revised script, the standard version to put on nowadays, Salieri's coat is described as black:

But, the script saying "black coat" does not mean that you must follow these instructions. (Unless there's something I don't know. In that case, please correct me.) In the 1998-2000 Broadway revival of Amadeus, which does use this script, Salieri is not seen wearing all black.

Salieri may be a self-proclaimed mediocrity, but I think he's still deserving of color in his costuming... even if he's nothing like gaudy ol' Mozart.
