So a lot of headcanons seem to go with Herm being a big Mecha fanboy, and I love the idea, but it seems weird in their interaction here that he doesn't recognize him straight away if that's the case.
So my take? Herman's a fan of heros in general, clearly he defintely likes Phenomaman and Blonde Blazer. But he has a more casual knowledge of other heroes at this point. So he's a casual Mecha fan during the tie scene.
He must have missed the Mecha Man press conference and not kept up with the news, because he was under the impression that Robert was dead? Internet rumors got out of control and lots of people thought he died when the suit got wrecked and so he didn't even think to follow any Mecha Man news after that?
Mecha Man was one of many heros that was the background radiation of his nerdy interests. So recognition comes eventually and you can tell that its a good realization because he has such a wistful voice when he realizes who is tying his tie.
He probably feels embarassed later that he said he thought Robert was dead to his face, but also he was a nervous wreck because he wanted to get a job at SDN so bad and everything was overwhelming. And his mouth ran off without his permission.
"Did I just call one of the biggest heroes dead and then tell him he was short?" he absolutely has a minor dying inside moment.
I like the idea of Herm becoming a more hardcore Mecha Man fan after this scene. He was so kind... He didn't have to help me with my tie... he didn't seem offput by my stuttering... His voice...
He gets to know Robert better over time because they work together, he just likes him. But Robert clearly has Blonde Blazer and Invisigal gunning for him, I can't compete with that. And Robert wouldn't look at me that way anyways.. It's nice to dream and get some posters, figurines, or other merch.
Sure he chose me to be on Z-team, but they were down a person they needed someone. (Not knowing that Robert chose him over Phenomaman. It's definitely my preferred version though you do miss out on that cute your the most important man in the city moment.)
And of course since this is my headcanon Herman is wrong... Robert likes him... Not like romantically... at first... He just so refreshing everybody else has an agenda, Herm just wants to be helpful, he wants to prove that he can do the thing, he wants to make the world a better place. He wants to be a hero because being a hero is something he's wanted to do forever. He's an actual nice person.
And this genuineness shines through and before Robert realizes it, he's fallen and he's falling hard.
VICTOR GIDEON MOVES like a crocodile. theyre slow and steady until they need to be (case in point, the hospital. victor quite literally stalks the damn halls, he's really calm and slow when he speaks, just to lash out when needed or during the bike scene) and nearly invisible even though theyre massive ginormous lizards. again case in point is when he literally kidnapped grace and moved about the hospital. he was SLEUTHING. the crooked teeth too. if you look at his mouth model, his teeth stick out unnaturally from his gums and are plated in gold. the gold part has no relevance but the way his teeth are arranged reminds me of the fact that crocodile teeth literally stick out at odd angles and thats how you tell them apart from alligators. I feel like there's less....unity (for a lack of better word) between the authors. I see other members of other ships reblog everything and read everything, but ifl there is a sub community within the community.... What are your thoughts?

Well I think these are two separate things and the lack of unity is not connected to the popularity. Except that the lack of unity is not helping us increase in numbers, but ultimately the numbers weren't there to start with (in comparison to other HP ships)
(fyi I am going to be anti-tagging this for the ships, not because I am against those ships or speak against them but ultimately doesn't need to end up in their tags)
Male gay ships have been popular across fandoms everywhere for a long time. I think there is a lot to unpack there but honestly I'm not going to contemplate about the impact of society and the patriarchy on fandom but here are a few reasons
if you're women reading it, you can feel more removed from the romance and experience it in a different way
men are better represented in fiction so statistically there are more men to write about
and the men are often written better (by male authors, while I think female authors do a better job at representing both genders)
there isn't an automatic power imbalance
As soon as a ship reaches a certain number, people will join it because it's popular and that really makes them stand apart from other ships and additionally ships within Harry Potter are going to go far because the fandom is big and so if you're looking for the most talked about ship for a fandom to join then yeah you'll end up there too
I used to be a Drarry shipper (while being a Hinny shipper simultaneously) and I was constantly spoiled for content and I honestly still miss because there was just so much to consume and mind you it was 12 years ago so the fandom was even more active than now. I shipped a lot of the popular male ships, the johnlock and the geraskier and there was the k-pop boy yaoi, like you won't hear me judge anyone's individual choice to ship two men but I do take issue with how women are sometimes used as a device to help the story along (read: incubator or evil)
You mentioned specifically ships where one of them is a Death Eater and that is also a reason, I think. A story exists because there is tension within it and often those ships exist because it's easy to create tension when characters are at odds with each other. Homophobia can also easily be used to instigate events within the story. Obviously not all fics are going to use those two things as tension but once a ship reaches popularity that ultimately stops mattering because they already have the numbers in their favour
J*gulus specifically is an odd one out but as far as a I recall it's all because of one popular fic (ATYD) featuring them and then again once you have a few people interested, the numbers increase themselves.
Specifically for Harry Potter as a fandom, there are so many people who have used and reused content and tropes and headcanons while not necessarily always going back to the source material that the actual idea of the character has been altered by fandom. I don't think there is inherently anything wrong with that and I'm definitely guilty of taking my headcanons and running with it BUT when it comes to ships like J*gulus you can't argue that Regulus was so insanely compelling in the books that it warrants this massive of a ship. Fandom made him interesting, I would almost consider it like a secondary ship, where it sprouted more from fandom than the source material.
I'm sorry this is gettting really long but I have a lot to say! Now onto the Hinny bit
The hinny community is fractured and when I came back to fandom around like 2021? I had no idea why that was but I felt like it was quite tangible that there were separate groups. I am not going to discuss as to the why that is. There are parts I know about and there are also probably even more I don't know about. Basically I think old drama has divided at least my corner of the Hinny community. I know a lot of people are drama-free and don't have issue with anyone but you're going to pick people you speak to and interact with that may not be speaking to some others. I think certain people's behaviour has also alienated people from fandom (and that's several people, in case you were thinking of one specific person). Such things happen within a lot of fandoms but considering we were already a smaller group, it feels more noticable.
Part of the reason I started another Hinny discord server is I wanted to be a more neutral space to be in. I was not involved in older stuff (even though I was in the fandom from like 2011-2014 but never really felt part of the community then) and the issues I've had with people was where they created issues themselves (plagiarism, harassment etc) and maybe only one or two people that I've personally had an issue with (and they can go wherever they want that's NOT our Disord server)
I do think the hinny community is a bit bad about reblogging and stuff. Even people I consider to be 'popular' can have like 10 or 20 likes on a post that in the jily fandom (much more active but still not a drarry) would have a 150. It gives me terrible FOMO. Again, the numbers play into this. No one reblogs so the people who follow other people also don't reblog because they never got to see those posts in the first place. That's why I appreciate blogs like the @myhinnyarchive so much, because they're honestly the backbone of our tumblr biome. Numbers exponentially increase as people share, and we're a bit bad at it. Sometime with events and stuff I feel like I'm talking to a wall. it's like no one cares, no one reblogs. It's a core group of people who give a damn and the rest...idk. And I can't complain, I know. I have lovely people around me and who make the effort and the events get some participants but I always feel like it could be so much more if people all just hit reblog even once. It's disheartening at times.
You don't join the hinny community for the popularity (i'd think, but correct me if I'm wrong?) so that does change the demographic of the people in it. Aka we are older and have other responsibilities and you can't prioritise fandom the way a hyperfocused teenager can, most of the time anyway. I would expect older people to be better about reblogging and things, but what do I know.
This general passiveness isn't just in reblogging, but also commenting etc and again I'm not judging individual people's choice on how they interact with fandom, but it's just the truth of why the community is just not doing any numbers. I think it's why get next to no fanart because why would you slave hours over an art piece that's going to get next to no interaction when you can do it for a ship slightly to the right that will get 10x the notes.
It shouldn't be just the most popular of the fandom accounts getting attention, we need to feel more interconnected by doing the effort ourselves. If you want it to be different, you need to start with yourself. Reblog (it doesn't fit your blog? Big whoop make a sideblog it's free), comment (no you're not too tired, short comments are valid too and better than nother) and for the love of god push all the buttons. Do it. Push like. Comment heart emojis for all I care but don't be a dead fish on land and wonder why you've run out of water, you know?
I don't want to judge anyone individually and I have met many amazing people who care and interact. I appreciate you and I see you. The general trend of passiveness is there and people like you notice, because you're right! That's just how it is

It’s okay to romanize it as ‘Jungryeok’, but please do not address him as ‘Gravity.’ I know we had this talk with 악어 (Acau) and to not call him crocodile, but I’m already seeing some people complaining about how hard his name is. It’ll take some time to get used to, but please please please call him 중력. If I had to give a guide on how to pronounce it, it would be like ‘jung-nyeok.’ It’s not one for one, but he’ll introduce himself and then you can base your pronunciation off of that.

The mischaracterazation of characters from the first game : Boss
I doubt many people will find this but I wanted to share my thoughts in the second game as I've come to realize why I don't really enjoy it as much as I did the first. I would like to start this off by stating this is my personal observations and opinions, if you are a fan of this game and enjoyed it, that's nothing to be ashamed of! You're entitled to your own opinion, and so am I.
Boss is going to be my main target for this little rant because I think he's been done the worst by the second game.
In the second game, Boss is framed as this cruel (perhaps a little pathetic) force that kept the ghosts in the office in an effort to not be alone. He's shown to be withholding the truth from them and lying to them about the truth of ghosts and how evil spirits are formed. Mind you, the secret was that good and evil are subjective and your ghostly form, your shadows, are built on your own guilt and your own perception of good and evil.
Brushing off the fact that I feel like this whole thing is super obvious, Charlie also mentions to Boss that Eugene has become his "puppet" and can't think for himself, make his own decisions, and that he just follows the rules Boss made blindly.
Essentially, Boss is antagonized in the second game, he isn't entirely villainized but he's framed in the wrong for keeping the ghosts stuck with him in the office. I'm not saying that it's not a bad thing to be doing, and had it been in character or made a little more sense to who he is in the first game, then I would have accepted it, but my main problem here is that it doesn't.
Let's see what we're shown of Boss in the first game. First and foremost, he's a sap. In the murderer ending, when Eugene sneaks off (directly disobeying Boss' orders and getting the help of Charlie to kill Jack as an act of justice for the kids and their mother), Boss has known Eugene for three days at most and he cries when he needs to seal the boy away.
One could argue that this relates to him and his whole agenda of keeping the office members close to him so he isn't to be alone, but I feel the need to mention that he drove Eugene away from the office once he realized that extended time with them was tampering with his mental state, making him prefer the underworld over the mortal world. If Boss really wanted to keep people close to him so they wouldn't be able to leave or think for themselves, he would've let Eugene stay. He wouldn't have driven him off and he would've let the boy continue to keep seeing them despite the harm it may cause to him.
In relation to this, if this Boss was the same one in CiU, then in the endings where Eugene dies (as a good spirit) then we wouldn't have the choice to choose between staying with the Underworld Office or passing on. Boss would have framed it as if he had no choice and was meant to stay with them.
Even if we take into consideration that Eugene could only stay in the mortal world if it was with the Underworld Office, we need to take into account that, had it not been for the office, Eugene had no reason to stay. He didn't have family close enough to stay nearby, sure he was friends with Luke but at the time they weren't that close, not close enough for Eugene to consider staying just for him.
This also debunks the "Boss' cute little puppet" comment, because he has given Eugene the freedom to make his own choices. Like in the main ending where Eugene breaks Jack's window. Boss had never told him to do that, hell, he never even told him that he could intervene, Eugene figured it out himself. In the first game, Boss is less of the controlling tyrant and more of a silent guide, only stepping in when absolutely necessary.
Now for his treatment with River. Yes, the hitting of the fan is a little iffy, but I view their dynamic as more of a sibling one and as someone with a sister myself, I get it. I doubt it's doing much harm anyway, they're ghosts.
One could argue that Boss gives Eugene all the freedom required compared to the other ghosts because he's the favorite, but there is a moment when Boss comes to River's defense, that being when Eugene called out for River in the subway and Boss reprimands him for calling her to a place that's sensitive to her. When River mentions calling Eugene newbie, Boss indulges in his own way and opts to call him junior.
In the first game, while we don't see much of the ghosts outside of how they interact around Eugene, it's evident that he cares. (Rivers character is also a little off in the second game too, but I'll delve more into her another time.)
Boss and River are also seen to be close, in the monster ending, once more, River is the one who's brought along to deal with Charlie and Eugene. Of all the people in the office, he chose River (I like to think she's also been with him the longest here). Hayden may have not been an option due to his age, but Joan is fully capable of joining him rather than Boss, and yet he chooses her.
Another inconsistency I would like to point out is his backstory. It doesn't quite make sense compared to what he's said about it in the first game?
In the monster of the underworld ending, Boss says this.
Boss states that he died not caring if he breaks himself if it were for the sake of justice, but in the game? He dies in a means of sacrifice. He puts himself into a portal to the underworld because he was told to do so, not of his own decision. I find it strange and rather anticlimactic for this to be the death of Boss in-game. It just doesn't feel right and it doesn't connect fully to what has been established in the last game.
In short, I believe that Boss (much like the rest of the cast) is mischaracterized in the second game. He's far more softer than he lets on, and I do think his character is drastically different depending on the game.
