This part of the river looks amazingly picturesque. The shore draws attention and beckons to climb onto the rocks, to watch the whirlpools, the foaming rapids, and the sun rays cutting through the darkness of the depths.
And yet, despite the beauty, the rocks here are strange. If you look more closely, you will notice how much they resemble fragments of broken concrete. The old-timers said that once, further upstream, there used to be a dam, but in the 1990s it was demolished. These are probably its remains, although this is only my guess. But if the guess is correct, then it is hardly a pleasant thought. A striking indifference to ecology, even to how this could have affected the lives of the local residents who used the water...
🏞Usually, dam removal is an entire engineering and ecological story and it is approached carefully, because people’s safety and ecosystems depend on it. Here are several main stages:
🔹️Gradual lowering of the water level. Holes are made in the dam or it is dismantled in parts.
🔹️Removal or recycling of construction material — concrete and metal are usually disposed of, sometimes pieces of concrete are reused in construction.
🔹️Cleaning of the riverbed and banks — silt, debris, and other accumulations caused by the blocked flow are removed.
🔹️Restoration of the river channel — ecologists and hydrologists help the river “return” to its natural course so that the water can flow freely.
🔹️Monitoring after removal — observing how the current changes, how fish, amphibians, and birds return.

🔹️Мониторинг после демонтажа — следят, как меняется течение, как возвращаются рыбы, амфибии и птицы.
