slasher films are really a 1980s & 90s thing & i find like, while i liked some fo the creative aspects of “cabin in the woods”, it wasn’t for Horror As A Genre Now so much as the old recycled image; if it really wanted to say something Current & overall applicable to the genre it would have gone with 1) the subgenres currently The Main Thing rn or 2) KEPT THESE PPL ALIVE TO FURTHER REINFORCE WHY IT'S FUCKED UP/TRANSPARENT/LESSENS THE SCARES & the shocking twist loses weight after their death & it makes it way, way more obvious that it’s joss & ppl behind him being a dominant voice in the project when it aligns with their biases i.e. the only reason the final ppl survive is how it fits into this, esp with joss

like, I wish I could appreciate the creative elements of Cabin in the Woods, like, I do think the Cabin secretly being AN ELABORATE SCHEME TO APPEASE SOME EVIL GOD BY SACRIFICING PEOPLE IN ARCHETYPES EVERY YEAR OR SOMETHING is a cool idea in theory.

and I thought using magic or drugs or something to further make people fit into archetypes was an interesting idea? like if the movie itself was about trying to force people into archetypes that they aren't actually good fits for (because they're HUMAN BEINGS, not stock characters) and exploring that and how the audience has expectations of people and reduces people to just their role would be really interesting?

but as it was, i can't even appreciate parts of it. I'm just so mad at it.

Like I do understand how it'd be hard to do a send up/satire of current horror trends without being a straight up parody (like I am having hard time imagining what you'd to satirize the torture porn stuff like Hostel and all resulting low grade copycats? Do I even WANT to do that?). So doing it with slashers is easier, the formula is a lot easier and a lot more ludicrous (while a lot of torture porn's problem is just unrelenting misogyny and GRIM DARK storytelling).

I think Cabin in the Woods would have been a lot of stronger about the point it was making about shoe-horning people into roles for the audience's sake if Jesse Williams and Anna Hutchison's characters were the last ones standing and the one who makes the choice at the end, rather than...the genre savvy, white dude self-insert and the not so virginal final girl. Like, imagine if Jules NEARLY gets killed for having sex with her boyfriend but ESCAPES instead and throws off the entire game/sacrifice thing.

(I still really don't like the end though)

oh god essentially this, I agree with all of this. 

like it's well done and again, it's not often horror legit scares me or hits me that deeply, but I don't enjoy watching films that just upset me? like, film, even horror, shouldn't really be an endurance trial. 

I liked a lot of sad, dark, upsetting fucked up things but I can usually find something that resonates with me, and in this case, i am just so ridiculously sadden for the victim, that is exactly how I feel.

I watched it by myself at 2 am and got irrationally worried and scared at any odd noises I could hear outside.

i haven’t seen inside but i remember reading a detailed review of it & haven’t worked up the nerve to it because the premise itself is one i’m like “NOPE NOPE NOPE” on but i’m also intensely curious about it lol

SO MUCH A HUGE NOPE.

Like I do think it SUCCEEDS as a horror movie, like, the vulnerability of the lead is just such a huge DDDD: for me that I'm immediately just horrified at the thought of someone trying to take her kid while she's still pregnant, and watching her be attacked and struggling to fight made me squirm so much and get and I loved the clever ways she fought off her attacker?

but it's just so bleak. I don't regret watching it but it wasn't an enjoyable film experience, if that makes sense? I enjoy creepy shit but I don't enjoy THAT, if that makes any sense.

lol like there are things that are annoying or frustrating about OUAT, depending on your perspective, & it has its problem but……..we’re talking about glee + any ryan murphy show which are A Level All Their Own practically
