People are rallying around a long-standing Winnipeg LGBT cabaret, hoping to ensure its doors will continue to stay open well after COVID-19-related health restrictions ease.

Three drag performers who are past Miss Club 200 pageant-winners and ambassadors for the Garry Street bar have started a GoFundMe drive which, in only a few days, has raised more than $24,000 of a stated $40,000 goal.

"A city of this size needs to have at least one queer bar, and it needs to be unapologetically, undeniably queer," said current Miss Club 200 Prairie Sky on Saturday. "And that's what Club 200 is for so many of us."

The club, which opened in 1988, has been closed since May 8 due to public health orders.

The impact of not having a nightlife space for the LGBT community has been immense, Sky said, adding she knows many in the community have been struggling without having the welcoming safe space to go to to connect with other queer people.

originally the word queer was a homophobic slur! that's just factual, and so if an lgbt+ person is uncomfortable with that word, I'll respect it.

but queer has also been reclaimed as an umbrella term for various lgbt+ identities, and guess what? that's okay too!

And I’m laughing cause I NEVER EVER registered ANY of it as malicious and I very much thought of it as REALLY nice support and registered it ENTIRELY as validation and it really helped me both explore my gender / sexuality and also let me know she would accept me no matter what 

And because I grew up regularly being called it I never had to come out of the closet cause I knew everyone already knew I was queer and some form of trans???

And so up until today those were some of the nicest memories I had growing up with her (since she used to regularly bully me almost any other time)??? And when I reflect on my LGBT journey, I LITERALLY have looked at those moments with fond bemusement and current day validation that I’ve always been like this and have always been so obviously like this that my sister always called me out and kept reminding me she didn’t care that I was the way I was???

I was technically bullied for being queer but...??? I never??? noticed??? it??? Because I registered it as support????? Because I just went “YOU NOTICED?! THANK YOU!!!!” 

I can’t believe how incorrectly her “bullying” was received XD
