My english teacher started talking about how trans women aren't allowed in womens bathrooms in the uk and how "the minorities are running the world" and I normally don't speak up in class because of my horrible social anxiety but something today in me snapped and I responded (calmly which is great because I'm autistic and I usually get very emotional when arguing and so people call me hysterical instead of actually listening to me) and told her that minorities are very much still being opressed and I don't think that they run the world when they're not even allowed to exist to which she said that "as a straight woman she feels opressed by all these parades and flags and why does everyone need a flag now" and I told her that's because queer people weren’t allowed to exist for decades and they were murdered for being queer and that during ww2 there were entire sections for gay men in concentration camps and queer women, trans men, trans women would get sent to the sections for "mentally ill" people but another classmate ended the discussion by saying that it got "too political"
I've never been in a situation like this before, I wasn’t sure what to do or what to say. I don't know if I behaved correctly but I did my best and I think I handeled it well, I felt scared and unsafe but also really fucking angry because I just want to exist. I don't want to have to fight for my existence but I have to and I will fight for myself and everyone else.
wow your english teacher sounds like a right bitch and a terrible teacher. It sounds like you handled it really well and I'm very proud of you for acting on your anger to make your argument rather than letting your fear silence you. you fight with all of us, and we stand as one
seriously though wtf is up with your teacher that's way too much politics for her to be expressing in the workplace
Sorry it's been a while since we've posted on here, we've started back at uni and have been busy. But with that in mind, to all queer people going back to school and uni: you deserve to be yourself in all the ways that you can. You deserve to use the bathrooms you're most comfortable in (including having access to gender neutral ones), compete in the sports you love if you're a sporty person, have stories that you can see yourself in be told, have friends that support you every step of the way and you can laugh with, and thrive in the ways only you can.
To those struggling with the new semester, know you aren't alone. There's lots of people out there in similar situations, fighting just as hard as you. We recognise your strength. Keep on fighting, keep on dreaming, and doing your best. That's all you need. And to any teachers, principals, and academic staff who are reading this, what's something you can do to help make your school/uni a safer place for queer and trans students? Have a think, do some research, and implement it. You'll help more people than you think by doing it.

Either way, here are some back-to-school reminders for LGBTQ+ students: 🏳️🌈You don’t HAVE to come out to friends, teachers, or anyone - unless you feel safe and ready to do that! 🏳️🌈You deserve to have your name, pronouns, and gender identity respected by everyone - it’s also okay if you’re still figuring it out. 🏳️🌈Ask for help when you need it, and take “mental health” breaks to relax between homework, practices, club meetings & sports. 🏳️🌈 See if your school has a GSA Club or similar organization, so you can connect with more LGBTQ+ people like you (if not, start one)! 🏳️🌈Try to connect with a teacher, guidance counselor, or friend you trust for when you need help or advice. 🏳️🌈Know that no matter what you’re going through this year, we support you, and it gets better. Hey guys, gals and nonbinary pals!
I’m a 20-year queer, first year and first-generation student at a university in Boston, pursuing a double major in public health and sociology with a minor in public policy. I struggle with ADHD, mild depression, and anxiety, and I’m working on getting a handle on my mental health and learning difficulties so that I can succeed in school and go on to graduate school.
In addition to posting about schoolwork and ADHD/mental health struggles, I’ll probably also post about poetry and creative writing, LGBTQ positivity and support, public health and sociology related topics, photography and art, and the occasional meme. This blog is a safe space for all LGBTQ-identified people!
