A Year in Language, Day 237: Fula Fula, also called Fulani, Pular, and Fulfulde is a Niger-Congo language spoken by over 24 million people in the Sahel, the geographic region just south of the Sahara desert. It has varying degrees of recognition in a number of countries, and is recognized as an official language in Senegal. The Fula people are one of Africa's largest and most widespread ethnic groups, and due to this far-reaching border-straddling nature both people and language vary to a degree as one moves from west to east across the Sahel. That said, Fula speakers claim to be able to understand other Fula with disparate dialects and as such cultural and linguistic unity is maintained. Like most Niger-Congo languages, Fula has an extensive system of gender or noun class. Unlike European and Afro-Asiatic gender systems these do not align with "natural gender" and for that matter not all of them have obvious semantic associations. When it comes to verbs, the major morphological divide, i.e. the category that most impacts all other forms of conjugation, is voice. Fula has three voices, Active, Passive, and Middle, which in English is often translated as a reflexive (verbing oneself). Fula is written in Arabic and Latin script, and since the 80's has also seen a rise in popularity of a native script invented by two Fula teenagers called Adlam.
