Momento (2000) paired with Moby Porcelain | Samuel Goldwyn (SPOILERS) in the movie he remembers her quirks of reading the same book over & over, and how much he misses her beside him; it never delves into the ugliness of their relationship breaking down..that is unless you count the moments he is hallucinating the fact that Sammy Jankins had a wife who tested his ability to remember, which would make it a bit creepier—I guess the Nolans were trying to signal how they felt about serial killers who get away with murder(?) ..but I'm not completely certain given how many shows have been based off this exact premise of righteous killings & of righting wrongs—personally I'm not convinced that was the purpose of the movie bc the central moment is when the mc (Lenny) says he used to think the spark of familiarity in Jankins' eyes was a sign he remembered Lenny, but he now recognizes it is just s/t we all do when we want to fit in without admitting to the ugly truth of our condition, so we pretend we recognize ppl we have never met before or have no recollection of ever being introduced to.

It wasn't about faking, he explicitly states it, he even shows it when he can't remember if he's met them or paid rent & the guy at the frontdesk is like you're paying for two suites. He also repeatedly denies ever saying Sammy Jankins was faking, out of remorse over the case; and to back it up, Natalie keeps asking him if he really doesn't remember her which is sign that he too has the spark of recognition despite not remembering.

And although there are points I have my doubts like how did he know to drive to the rundown & discount motels except through consistent repeated exposure(?), but maybe we're just not shown how he struggles to get there so the movie isn't 6hrs long. He was angry with Teddy & suspicious of his character, and leading up to the final confrontation Lenny is asking is that true and as he searches his pockets, he finds the photograph with the words: Don't trust Teddy's lies. Both Teddy & Natalie separately inform Lenny how she can say & do anything and he'd be none the wiser or other ppl could take advantage of his amnesia. The Discount Motel front man admitted to the same thing, Lenny is being had & redirected by ppl constantly so it's no wonder he can't trust much of anything.

The thing is he can't form new memories so I think Sammy Jankins really did have a wife who died of the overdose & Teddy being the perv who called him on the phone, got every little detail from Lenny who regularly spoke to s/o on the phone about Sammy Jankins. I think this whole thing is about regretting he wasn't more understanding of Sammy Jankins' plight & now that the chairs have changed, Lenny's suffering is twofold: He can never relish the revenge he wanted for the killers, nor can he go back in time to change his decision on the insurance claim to save Jankins' wife—not that he killed his own wife. Momento vs Fight Club: The voice of the narrator sounds exactly like Brad Pitt from Fight Club, they even tried to make him look like Pitt in certain frames, so it isn't much of a stretch CN was going after the same milieu as David Fincher—espcially given the theme of memory loss/confusion. The pacing for Momento makes it easier to follow but the choppy flashbacks of Fight Club seemed believable albeit harder to understand what exactly you were watching. The memory loss of Lenny (Guy Pierce) doesn't make much sense when he doesn't remember who he is or where he is, yet somehow he remembers how to drive to the abandoned motel, yet failing to understand its significance when asked by Teddy? I am a little freaked out by the one analysis on the Matrix, where the OP said the traitor Cypher is the same guy in Momento, how could he age so rapidly within one year of filming???

This is hilarious, meet today?? (no date) how many times has he tried to meet Natalie or called Teddy? Plus how is this photo of Natalie even helpful for a guy with memory problems?? Compared to Nolan's very first film other analysts have talked about a bored man who notices a thief one day & begins to follow him around, eventually they strike up a conversation where the thief convinces the man to get cleaned-up with new clothes & a haircut, but it turns out the thief was planning to frame the guy as the killer of his ex-g/f whom he introduces the normie to. Anyways, it just seems like Nolan has a recurring theme of a schlep taking the fall for a corrupt individual.

This insurance claim he investigates sounds like his case..Sammy Jankins should still be able to learn thru conditioning, repeated exposure. Lenny talks about how when he looked into SJ's eyes he thinks SJ has a glimmer of recognition upon seeing him, but still SJ calims to not have ever met Lenny, so Lenny says he orders more tests bc he doesn't believe it is the truth.

In the following scene we see him meeting Natalie at the same cafe again as he pulls up to park at the same spot, but this time he is shown waking up in her bed. They get ready for the day & he asks her again why she is helping him, as she informs him about contacting her friend at the DMV to find out who the owner is. Her reply this time is bc you helped me remember? To which he says no, I don't know if this is a flashback or just her sleeping with him repeatedly..

The flashback is to SJ getting electrified by the pyramid, and Lenny is on the phone talking to someone (maybe his VM) saying the same objects are always electrified, the point of test is not to see if SJ would remember but if he would avoid it thru instinct.

I guess it is looping back to the instance he "helped" Natalie, but each time we are given more information. Awake in bed he says "how am I supposed to heal if I can't feel time" [37:40]

Half the time he is on the phone or half-naked, but the cool conversation with Teddy where he says, "That's who you were before, not who you are now." And did you wander into a Jaguar dealership or wear designer suits, the whole time I thought both his suit & the car was almost worn down. And now it's so confusing, you don't know who is telling the truth to Lenny bc they all have motive to use him for their own ends.

Towards the end Lenny is fully clothed, is this significant in Momento (2000)?
