Warren Mitchell as Shylock in BBC Television’s Shakespeare (1980). Mitchell is one of the few actors to portray Shylock who is also jewish in real life.
Years later, he would portray the character again in a BBC Radio 4 production.
He is my favorite Shylock.
I love the concept of the problem plays so much.
First of all, it’s basically a bunch of academics looking at a play and deciding “yeah, I don’t know, this seems a little problematic to me.” And then just cancelling the play.
Second, it implies the existence of non-problematic Shakespeare plays. Which, DUDE. These were written in ELIZABETHAN ENGLAND. THEY’RE ALL PROBLEM PLAYS. THEY ARE RIPE WITH PROBLEMS.
Like damn. It’s just such a stupid and hilarious concept and that’s what I’m thinking about today at one in the morning.
