This weekend my weird little fan life delightfully crossed into real life. I attended a party and was introduced to a cocktail made with Creme de Violette. And it was pretty damn good. Gotta say I think that Colonel PSEV was really on to something.

Warren Mitchell - 1926-2015
From the 1960's to the 1990's Warren Mitchell was, as far as the British TV viewing public was concerned, loud-mouthed, bigoted West Ham fan Alf Garnett.
He was, of course, far more versatile than that and was one of England's finest actors of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. He was also bloody handsome.
Despite receiving acclaim and awards for a plethora of stage, TV and film roles (Willy Loman in a 1979 NT production of "Death of a Salesman", Shylock in a 1980 BBC adaptation of "The Merchant of Venice") it was in "Til Death us do Part" (1966-1975) and later in "In Sickness and in Health" (1985-1992) that he became a household name in both the UK and Australia.
An acting hero of mine, and a pipe smoker as well (winning Pipe Smoker of the Year in 1968, which he refused out of principle).
Interviewed at the time by the BBC, both as himself and as Alf, he let Alf express both their reactions: "I'll tell them to stick it".
Even so, he looked bloody fine with a pipe in his mouth.
I don't even hold it against him that he was a North Londoner and a Spurs (and not a West Ham) fan. I mean, who could be upset with a man sporting facial hair like that?
