fanfic idea / headcanon - i donât even know
I kinda want this conversation to happen somewhere in my fic. This also doubles as headcanon, probably. Maybe in this story. Or maybe this could also be expanded in this, though Iâm not sure the feel would fit. Either way, this probably will be much into the future, whichever one. I have no idea which chapter to place this yet, or which part, so Iâm just gonna post it here for now. Who knows, maybe someone will get inspired. Mostly, this is probably part II of this headcanon. Though, I realize the point of this conversation probably already exist in some of pro-tony fics. It felt familiar when I re-read this.
Warning: very much not steve-friendly. Or team steve-friendly. (and here I thought Iâve moved on. damn.). Also hints of pre-winteriron there at the end. or not. could also be gen, since it can go either way. Iâm tagging this as winteriron, though.
â â I thought I was sparing him! I know now, I know Iâm just sparing myself. I know I fucked up, butâ"
Bucky shook his head, a hand raised to cut through Steveâs tirade. He could see now, the words that he needed to say. The words he kept inside him, unspoken. The thought that flitted into his mind as Steve tried to justify everything heâd done.
There couldnât be any justification in betrayal.
âNo, Steve,â he started. âYou didnât do it to spare yourself. You werenât sparing anyone; you werenât trying to even protect anyone. No, you choose not to tell him was because it was easier.â
Steve looked confused and shocked, but before Steve could deny his words, Bucky continued on.
âEver since you woke up in this century, it was hard for you, wasnât it? Everything was hard, it mustâve been. You had to re-learn everything, study the things people around you already knew for granted. Back then, conversation meant baseball games from the radio, stories came in narrative and voice-over in radio. You didnât have to learn about trends and quotes, music and dancing was all you had to learn about. It wasnât even the fighting and this team-thing that was hard, that you have no problem in adjusting. But, it was everything else, wasnât it?
You didnât know how to connect.
Before, you only need to listen to the radio and read newspaper to keep up with the conversations around you. But today people used quotes and references thatâs been built up over the course of you being frozen, far after your time that you had to keep up. And itâs impossible to keep up. When you finally understand one reference, another one popped up. But, nowadays, you need to know popular movies of the last decades or so even understand a modicum of what your teammates were talking about. Youâre among your peers, but you must feel like an alien in a wrong planet where you are the odd one. It made you feel stupid, didnât it?â
Steveâs eyes were wide, his lips were parted, but there were no words coming out of the. So, Bucky continued.
âFortunately for you, your legend had become bigger than you are. People look up to you, so even though you feel lost and disconnected, you let them. You try to be humble, but the whole captain America shindig had made it easier. Even if you donât understand some things, people will still listen to you, and they listen the way people wouldnât have back then, even with the serum in your blood. You donât have to prove anything, you talk and they pay attention. Even when you didnât know things, they will still follow you as long as you have conviction. If they follow you, then they donât make fun of you.
If regular people already made you feel disconnected, you must feel like an outright idiot with Tony Stark.
He sees things so far into the future, when youâre still trying to catch up with the present. He already started saving and protecting people on his own, even before the Avengers became a reality. You hear the good heâd done in every news you see, outside of SHIELD and outside of Avenger, and it made you feel inferior, replaceable. The good that you could do was thanks to the support of SHIELD, and before, Erskine and even his father. Tony Stark doesnât need any of those things to become a hero. He made his own superpower, made things possible by his own genius. I think, consciously or not, you realize that without Tony Stark, the Avengers itself would cease after the fall of SHIELD. And the Avengers, after SHIELD was gone, became the only place you could feel like you belonged.
And that makes you feel even more useless, isnât it? SHIELD had become so invested with HYDRA, and you didnât know it. You couldnât trust anyone, who was HYDRA and who wasnât. You were lost again, but you couldnât move on your own either. Your power lies in the people that listened to you. You remember when you had no power, when everyone would cast you aside and dismiss you. But in present day, the name Captain America carry enough weight to be a power on its own. Enough to make people listen.
But the name Tony Stark has equal weight, if not more, than your Captain America. In strength, the power you got from the serum means almost nothing against the varying capabilities Iron Man has. Iron Man could make an armor to go against a Hulk, while the only other person to even go against the Hulk is Thor himself. In smarts, the guy is a genius, but I donât think you really understand how that word means in terms of Tony Stark.
You feel mediocre, useless, powerless, so you focus on the bad heâd done. Your teammates follow your lead, so you feel justified as you emphasize on the manâs mistake. Itâs easier to feel strong, to feel important, when people follow you as you demonized Tony Stark. It makes standing in the same room as him easier, because you make people remember that youâre a good man, and Tony Stark is the arrogant rich guy that makes a world-ending mistake.
Youâre not a bad man, Steve. Youâre not evil or intentionally cruel. But, all your actions, your choices, and how you act against him makes me think of how much of a bully youâve become. Worse, because your mistakes also had impact on the world. Whatâs sad is that how you donât even realize it. Despite all the signs, you kept ignoring it. You used to be in touch with yourself, you knew who you are. But now, I donât think you know either. Youâve lost yourself, and you made Tony your victim because it makes things easier, and because Tony was used to it and let you.â
Something crumbled in Steveâs expression, something that Bucky would feel guilty for, a century ago. Now, he just watched as Steve tried to justify himself again.
âNo, Buckâthatâs notâI didnâtââ
Bucky continued on.
âI donât doubt you cared for me too, Steve. But, thatâs not all there is. You focus on me, because Iâm your only connection left after Peggy died. I donât think you could properly connect with her either, even when she was still alive. You cared for her too, but that she had dementia was your saving grace. Sometimes, she would remember you as if she was still in the 40âs. So, you didnât need to hear how she had moved on and got married, had a son or daughter or nieces or nephews. So no, you didnât do what you did to protect anyone, Steve. You werenât protecting me or yourself. That you even thought you were trying to protect him only told me how lost you are with yourself. You tried to justify everything when really, where is the justice? Justice is you going to prison and face trial. Justice is me going to prison and face trial. Justice is to bring his parentsâ murderer behind bars. Justice is him never having to face any of you ever again. Justice, is him, washing his hands off you and live on.â
Steve didnât move or say anything. But, Bucky figured, what was there to say, really? But, Bucky wasnât done. No one else seemed to speak up, so he did. It was almost freeing, but he knew his words must hurt too, not only for Steve.
âHe finally fought back, and now you say you wanted things to be the way they were? The way they were was you being a bully and him suffering, Steve. If you really want to go back to that, you mustâve changed more than I thought and youâre no longer the Steve that was my best friend, the little guy who hated bullying of all kinds.â
Bucky thought he wanted to say more, but what was left of his words were nothing but disappointment and sadness for Steve, and for himself. Bucky turned around, not feeling the need to see the moment Steve realized for himself that everything he said was true. He didnât need to see either the faces of those that dared to stay in the room when Buckyâs voice started to rose, when Steveâs voice rose even higher. Bucky exited the room in sure strides, leaving silenced lips in his wake. when the door closed behind him, he let out a breath of something. It was almost like relief, but something heavy still lingered, almost like a loss.
âYou didnât have to do that,â someone said from beside him. Bucky turned in surprise, to see Tony Stark leaning beside the door. There was something unreadable in his face that for Bucky it looked almost like resignation.
âI did have to. He was my friend.â
There was a reminder in his words, almost an echo of the fight a few years ago. Bucky flinched when he realized it, but Tonyâs face didnât change.
âHeâs my friend.â
âSo am Iâ
It was reminder that, once upon a time, this man had thought the people behind that door as friends.Â
Tonyâs face turned down at his shoes, expression still, and Bucky thought that was that. He nodded his goodbye, not sure if the other man saw it or not. He waited a few seconds, in case there was an acknowledgement or â something, perhaps indignation or anger, and turned towards the other direction when there were none.
âThank you,â he heard, and Bucky stopped and turned back. Tonyâs eyes were glanced towards him, but his face were still turned down. Tony then straightened up, nodding once, and went to the other way from Buckyâs direction.
A/n: I realize there are other characters that might fit more in  speaking those words. But, I chose Bucky because I think it can still be believable (also because I havenât been able to come out of this winteriron hell, not like I tried anyway). If Black Widow and Winter Soldier were cut from the same cloth (or received similar training), then Winter Soldier must be able to read people too. Steve most of all, since I donât think Steve will leave Bucky alone to the point of suffocating. So, everything he said here was mostly from observation, mostly of Steve and his gang. But, he knows enough of Tony Stark to make the conclusion, from observation alone, because he does have a keen eye (sniper, right) and pretty perceptive, even better than Natasha.
On another note, Iâm not sure I managed to convey everything, but once this becomes a proper fic, I think Iâll fix it. It feels too long and some words were repeating lol.

Whumptober day 30 - Recovery
My second-to-last fill for @whumptober2019â, a somewhat silly Pre-WinterIron AU where Tony goes to a rehabilitation center after getting heart surgery. Itâs also available on Ao3.
----- ----- -----
Rhodey and Pepper had been the ones to convince him to go to the Marvel Rehabilitation Center.
Heâd argued at first. Heâd managed to make it through the first operation, after all, and those circumstances had been less than ideal. This time he had anesthetics, and he wasnât being tortured, and he had time to heal at his own pace instead of racing against time to try to figure out a way to escape.
When heâd said so, theyâd only looked sad, which hadnât been his intention. He just wanted to make it clear that he didnât need any help, medical or psychological, because he could deal with it.
They had argued just as hard and, when outlining the many benefits of medical and psychological help as well as having a place where there would be other people around to keep him busy in medically appropriate ways did not work, they pleaded with him. And while he was great at saying ânoâ to their arguments, he was incredibly weak to their pleas.
So the Marvel Rehab Center it was.
For the first few days, heâd hated it. He didnât want to talk about his traumas (he would like to forget all about them) and he didnât want any assistance (he would like to just work his way through everything like he usually did).
Still, heâd remembered his promise to his best friends, and so he tried. Marvel was huge, after all, dealing with all kinds of problems and people. So he figured that, if nothing else, heâd be able to find a way to be less bored. Rehab-appropriate diversion was what heâd been promised, and heâd find it even if it killed him.
The staff hadnât been too pleased with the fact that heâd sort of gone missing for a few hours, but Tony figured it had been more than worth it (and he bet that if he asked the staff now, theyâd agree - heâd been a lot calmer and more agreeable since).
Steve had been the first one heâd met. Steve was tiny and ready to throw down whenever and also suffered from a laundry list of illnesses that he had apparently thrown down with ever since he was born. Tony liked him instantly.
Bruce was the second one. From what Tony could gather, heâd had some bad history which had resulted in Dissociative Identity Disorder, with an alternate identity named Hulk. It was also easy to tell that Bruce was terrified of hurting anyone, and despised Hulk for his violent tendencies (though always towards objects rather than people). Besides that, though, he was also a brilliant scientist, and Tony had zero hesitation about hanging out with him as often as possible.
Natasha was the third, and Tony was honestly not entirely sure what was up with her. He guessed it had something to do with the suspicious way she tended to watch everyone, or the way she had a tendency of appearing this close to killing someone. But sheâd looked lonely, and everyone had appeared to be afraid of her. Tony could basically feel Rhodey and Pepper facepalming in the distance as he approached her.
Clint was next. Clint was a disaster. Chaotic, depressed, and beyond clumsy. He also had the single best sense of humor Tony had ever found. Heâd decided he was adopting Clint.
Sam was also depressed, as well as traumatized, from losing his best friend. He seemed to find part of his own purpose in helping out others at the Center and often led some sort of mindfulness group that Tony had said he would join only if Steve would. Considering the thought of Steve trying out mindfulness was laughable, he wasnât anticipating that would be something to worry about.
Thor was loud and cheerful and had body dysmorphic disorder. He tried his best to be cheerful and it was clear that most of the other people found him overwhelming. The fact that he was incredibly tall and incredibly muscular didnât help much. Thor laughed at Tonyâs jokes when he made them and clapped him on the shoulder hard enough that he wondered if it had left a bruise.
Finally (and perhaps most importantly), there was Bucky. Bucky, who had seen war. Bucky, who had lost his left arm. Bucky, who had then been held as a prisoner of war. Bucky, who was ridiculously attractive and ridiculously sarcastic and ridiculously smart.
Tony had decided he wanted to marry Bucky.
He wasnât in a hurry - it was clear Bucky was not comfortable with himself, didnât feel like he was in a position to get into a relationship. But Tony was more than willing to wait if that was what it took, and eventually heâd be able to ask Bucky out and hope the other man would say âyesâ so Tony could get on with his twelve-step plan towards marrying him.
That evening, heâd texted Rhodey and Pepper. Met my future husband. Youâll love him.
He might not have wanted to go here, but he couldnât bring himself to regret it. Not as he looked around at all of them. Not as Steve threatened to fight Thor, who looked at him like he was a particularly adorable puppy. Not as Clint knocked over their game board accidentally and Bruce facepalmed. Not as Sam and Bucky snarled at one another, looking about ready to tear each othersâ throats out. Not even as Natasha pulled out a knife from somewhere (and he was pretty sure she wasnât allowed to have them) and told them all to shut the hell up and sit down before she made them.
In fact, he mused, he should send Rhodey and Pepper a thank-you card. Perhaps the others would even add a message of their own.
Whumptober day 8 - Stab Wound
My eight fill for @whumptober2019â, where Bucky is a doctor and Tony is a little less rich and famous. Also available on Ao3.
----- ----- -----
By now, Bucky had been a doctor for a while, and he had plenty of experience being professional.
Which didn't explain the instant rush of attraction he felt when he saw his newest patient. True, Bucky was pansexual. Also true, his patient was undeniably gorgeous. But there were boundaries, and heâd never once had a problem with them.
Until Anthony Stark was brought in on a stretcher, bleeding from a stab wound to his arm and still looking bright and lively.
Just as quickly as his feelings appeared, they were crushed when he was immediately followed in by a beautiful redhead that was obviously beyond worried about him. The brief hope of the slightest family resemblance was quickly dashed, and the way the two of them spoke to one another made their mutual fondness more than clear.
âIâm just saying it wonât take more than a few stitches,â Mr. Stark was saying, smiling reassuringly at his companion.
âAnd Iâm saying youâre staying here until they say youâre safe to go and not a moment sooner,â she replied instantly, looking sternly down at him. Then, her attention turned to Bucky. âYouâll take good care of him, wonât you?â
Pushing his personal issues aside, Bucky nodded at her, trying for his best and most professional smile. âCertainly maâam. Iâm Dr. Barnes, and Iâll be taking care of Mr. Stark for the evening.â
âGood luck on that,â she told him wryly, casting an amused look at the man in question. âHeâs never liked hospitals.â
âHeâs right here, thank you very much,â he huffed, eyes narrowed. Bucky wanted to smack himself when the phrase âoffended kittenâ popped into his head. He was a professional.
âOf course, Mr. Stark,â he nodded. The full force of his patientâs eyes hit him, and it took everything he had to pretend to be unaffected. âLetâs have a look, shall we? See if we need to send this through to our radiology department to see if anything vital was hit, or if you were right and a couple of stitches will do the trick.â
âI swear, I couldâve just gone home and put a band-aid on it,â Mr. Stark shrugged.
Bucky wasnât too surprised to see his partner puff up with anger. âYou got stabbed, Tony,â she hissed. âThat requires a little more than a band-aid.â
âIt was a light stabbing?â he tried, wilting a little in the face of her obvious rage.
Telling a woman she sounded like a balloon furiously deflating was likely to get him killed, which was why Bucky made a note to himself never to mention the thought crossing his mind in that moment. âI am going to get myself something to drink, and you are going to let this nice doctor take care of you, you hear me?â
âLoud and clear,â was the immediate reply. Despite his laconic treatment of his wound, Mr. Stark was clearly not foolish enough to treat his partner the same way.
âHonestly,â she muttered, stalking out on heels so high Bucky rather worried about her ankles.
âSorry about that,â Mr. Stark spoke up once she was far enough away that she couldnât hear him. âI tried telling her it wasnât so bad, but she insisted on coming to the hospital.â
âHow about you let me be the judge of that, huh?â Bucky said with a grin he only partially had to force as he turned his attention to the wound. As much as he was disappointed that nothing could come of his feelings, the byplay of the two of them arguing couldnât help but amuse him. (And if he kind of wanted to banter with Mr. Stark the same way, well, that was really not something he should be thinking about.)
Only a few minutes ago, Bucky had mused over the way Mr. Starkâs attention had just about stunned him. It had nothing on the grin now on that gorgeous face, however, or the way his brown eyes seemed to glow with an inner light. âI suppose you did study for this,â the man joked.
âYears,â he managed to joke back in return. âMultiple years of blood, sweat, tears and study debt to tell you that you need a little more than a band-aid for this.â
âAww,â he pouted, and that shouldnât be so attractive on a full-grown man. âOnly a little though, right?â
He shouldnât be flirting with a taken man, Bucky knew, but it was hard to resist when the taken man was this attractive. âSo eager to get out of here, Mr. Stark?â
âLike Pepper said - Iâm not too fond of hospitals,â he admitted with a half-shrug. Then, he grinned at Bucky again, making his heart rate go up a little more than was entirely comfortable. âThough if all doctors were this handsome, they wouldnât be half as bad.â
And that was outright flirting, wasnât it? Except he should be with the woman he came in with - Pepper, heâd called her. Which meant he shouldnât be flirting with Bucky, and if he did, he was not the kind of guy Bucky should want to be flirting with.
Some of his thought process mustâve shown on his face, because Mr. Stark grimaced. âSorry, Iâve been told I can be too much. Donât mind me, just⊠thought you seemed interested, no biggie if youâre not. Didnât mean to make you uncomfortable,â he rambled, seeming dejected more than anything.
Really, Bucky should just finish doing his job and let it go. But he found he couldnât. âItâs not that⊠I just thought that you and your companion wereâŠâ
âOh.â Brown eyes opened wide in realization. âYou thought Pepper and I are⊠No, no, weâre friends, and colleagues, but weâre not together,â he explained, and it was odd how utterly relieved Bucky felt at that.
And while he still had some stitches to do, once Tony Stark wasnât his patient anymore⊠Well, heâd be free to ask him out then, wasnât he? âWell then, I am afraid I do have to inform you that a relationship between a doctor and his patient is not allowed,â Bucky told him, continuing immediately when he noticed a faint hint of sadness on his face. âAfter those stitches are in, thoughâŠâ
The smile he got in return made him worry heâd need a doctor of his own if he were to start a relationship with Tony Stark.
He thought that would be worth it, though.
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
Yes, Tony knew it was his own fault that he was sitting here, shivering and clutching his blanket and feeling like he was about to break. Especially as it was becoming increasingly clear this wasn't just going to go away.
Fortunately, he had people who cared about him.
This is a work that was inspired by my feelings for the amazing people over at the @winterirondiscord, which I have been blessed to have been part of for one year today. Thank you all so much - you have made my life a better place!
It also fills square I3 - Touch Starved for the @winterironbingo and square Y4 - Hurt/Comfort for the @buckybarnesbingo and was partially inspired by the @whumptober2019 series that I am currently working on, which has touch-starved as one of the alternative prompts.
