Georgia’s New Heartbeat Bill
I’ve seen a lot of posts of outrage against this bill, and while I don’t usually get involved in politics, I’m making an exception for this one. As usual, I am not looking for a fight. Legit discussions can be had, but if you come in my inbox or in my notes yelling that I’m a horrible woman-hater I Will Block You.
So, What is the Heartbeat Bill?
The Heartbeat Bill was passed by Georgia lawmakers last week. The bill basically says that a woman cannot have an abortion after a baby’s heartbeat is found. This event can be recorded six weeks after conception.
Really? At Six Weeks a Baby Has a Heartbeat Inside the Womb?
Yep! “Between 5 ½ to 6 ½ weeks, [. . .] a fetal heartbeat may be detected by vaginal ultrasound.” And at the end of sixteen weeks, the first signs of brain activity can also be seen! Isn’t that cool?
Why Are People Upset About This?
At six weeks, many women do not even know they are pregnant (since going six weeks without a period could simply be your period being late, as opposed to pregnancy). People are becoming upset about this, saying that it is not right for women to be forced to carry a baby to term if they do not know about it until after the six week period.
Was That The Original Intention?
No. The original intent was saving baby’s lives, not forcing women to carry babies to term. There is a push to ‘prove’ when a baby becomes a person, and so far this is the best we have. So far, a heartbeat and brain waves are the best way we have to scientifically determine if someone is alive, so that is what we are using. The fact that both of these things occur before many women know they are pregnant is not a fabrication, but more a testament to how amazing and precious human life is.
Any anti-abortion laws or movements are not trying to ‘force’ women to do anything. They are about protecting human life, no matter how small it is.
TLDR; What is the Fundamental Reason People Are Getting Upset About This?
Well, honestly? The really deep answer is this: If we can scientifically prove that life begins at conception, or six weeks, or anytime between then and birth, people have to come to terms with the fact that they supported, or committed murder. It is a guilty conscious keeping them captive, telling them that if it is true that life begins at conception, then they are guilty of killing a defenceless human life. And that’s the real thing that they don’t want to deal with.
Conclusion:
However, every pro-life person that I personally know (of which I know a lot) would never judge anyone for that. Turning away from that lifestyle is hard enough without the people you are trying to turn to berating you. If you want more resources on that, check out these links:
