Retinol me now
Sissy Poohs - and yes it’s 10:08pm, and yes these are some late night thoughts.
This prenatal acne is kicking my ass - hard.
But it’s partially my fault. I was drinking too much ginger ale and possibly eating too many of my nieces gummy candy over Christmas. But I have never broken out this bad from sweets.
I think I might be cleaning it up a little though. Yesterday I went for a prenatal massage and very mild facial (deep cleaning and exfoliating). Then last night I started breaking out the pimple patches and extraction kits to pluck any dark hairs, clean up my eyebrows and to start bursting, squishing and removing these toxins from my face. Slight progress.
Tonight I decided to dermaplane my face. I also found an exfoliating cleanser by Cetaphil that I incorporated into my nightly routine; it’s gentle enough to use daily. After I dermaplaned I washed my face with my regular cleanser with salicylic acid by CeraVe + the Cetaphil, used witch hazel as a toner, did a collagen mask, went back in to poke at these disgusting pimples, and used the pimple patches (both small and big) by Curology on my face. I put them on a few hours ago and could already see the gunk in my face coming out. It’s nasty but it’s cool. I just can’t wait until Baby Boy makes his debut so I can get back to using tretinoin and hydroquinone to treat these dark spots because chilllllllllllle, I feel ugly.
That’s was all. We’ll see how much better (please God) my face looks tomorrow.
Update
It’s tomorrow morning, 6:52am. Baby boy is hungry. Not only did I just eat an apple I’m about to make scrambled eggs and bacon.
But I removed the pimple patches and the pimples were demolished, depleted, done.
Amen
Because it came up, I thought I'd talk a little about heat treatments during pregnancy. There is some hard medical misinformation going on with pregnancy that has implications.
Reason 1 why people tell you to avoid heat during pregnancy: There is a window between 3 and 7 weeks where if the uterus gets over 104° (maternal temperature 102.5°) for 24 hours, it can cause miscarriage and defects. You might not even know you're pregnant before you're out of that window, because your first missed period doesn't happen until you're 4 weeks. However, this single window means that some people are pushing 98° baths and no exercising the entire pregnancy and it's just BS.
Reason 2: chlorine & bromine in hot tubs have concerning health effects, like lowering the mother's immune responses and getting her sicker, and increasing pre-term labor. But this is not for all heat, this is for pools and hot tubs that are cleaned with chemical solvents. It doesn't apply to saunas, steam rooms, body wraps, or table warmers (TURN ON THE TABLE WARMER FOR PREGNANT LADIES GAHHHH)
Reason 3: hypotension. Pregnant women have naturally lower blood pressure and heat lowers blood pressure even more. If blood pressure gets too low, the placenta won't have enough blood and therefore the baby doesn't get enough oxygen, which can cause preterm labor and birth defects. This is true for persistent hypotension — low blood pressure that is consistently less than 100-over-60. Transient hypotension, where it isn't consistent, has no risk. If you've got regular blood pressure, it's safe to get a massage or heat treatment because even if you do get dizzy or lightheaded, it's not consistent and therefore, not dangerous. Though you do want to be careful when changing positions like going from laying to sitting or sitting to standing, because you might faint and hit your head.
Reason 4: The actual reason to be concerned with heat treatments is the detoxification. Steam rooms, saunas, and certain ingredients in wraps can increase lymph flow and cause fat to release toxins into the bloodstream, which can harm the baby. There is also some preliminary research that the uterus detoxes heavy metals, and we want to avoid sending mercury and arsenic to the fetus. Thus being aware of ingredients and not using a sauna or steam room if you aren't pretty clean before getting pregnant is important.
So why don't spas let women get body wraps or use table warmers during a massage? For the same reason that people recommend baths at 98°; rather than look at the studies, they go "better safe than sorry, I don't want to get sued." You are totally safe to get most body wraps and have the therapist turn on the table warmer, but most spas don't want to take the risk. And it's BS.
(I would recommend getting a seaweed wrap or a hydrating body treatment if you're pregnant because they both restore lost minerals and necessary water. If you can convince a person to do it.)
Ketogenic diet protects young rats from effects of prenatal stress
Researchers have shown that young rats fed a ketogenic diet – a diet with high fat and low carbohydrates – are protected from the lasting experience of pre-natal stress. This work, which needs to be confirmed in humans, is presented at the ECNP conference in Amsterdam An extensive body of research has shown that if mothers experience stress while pregnant, the offspring can suffer ongoing…
