Perfect drip. I love it when a plan comes together. 💧 My catch plates are just a groggy clay (Death Valley here) rolled out thin, cut, rolled out more (because you can get a small piece much thinner than a large slab) and then dried between two pieces of drywall. They can be bisqued before use, but they can also be put directly in the glaze fire. I get a number of uses out of each one. You can see from the color changes where prior pots have rested that this one has been used a few times. Suddenly these handles are all coming together. The glaze can run down the long curve, and also run away from the texture area at the bottom of the handle to drip at the lowest point. Sweet! And check out that flow/bubbling in the blue. It’s a reaction caused by this glaze combo, and I can’t get enough of it. #throwbackthursday I am making more of these sake / espresso cups this week because they allow me to experiment without regrets. For me, glaze testing goes like this: 1. Scrap of clay bent into an L. If some little part catches my eye, then it moves on to part 2. 2. Burnished formal test tile with copious notes. Always tested by virtual brushing 2 coats, 3 coats, 4 coats on one side, and horizontal brushing on the other side. (Yes, the direction makes a huge difference.) 3. Small cups with lots of form variations then show how the glaze moves and pools. They test my ability to get the glaze to stop above the texture, and allow me to create interesting variations around the cup as well as the inside/outside options. Again, very detailed notes. . Next to my tea bowls, these little gems are my most expressive pieces because anything goes. #mugshotmonday I’m brainstorming for a name for this drippy combo. I happened on it by accident (okay, by screwing up a planned glaze application. It took me a month to figure out what I did.) I love the result. Name ideas are very welcome. 💜💚💙 In addition, I am delighted to report that I finally have 16 oz mugs! It only took me 6 months to finger out that last 2 ounces. 😆 Wider bottoms got in the way of the glaze drips or messed up that foot taper. Wider tops made them look top heavy (and just wrong.) The answer? These are 1/3 inch taller. I literally face palmed when I measured the capacity and got 16 oz.
