#glazegeek warning: This is my control freak side. Crystalline glaze runs. It’s what it does best. I love to use that to show the movement of the glaze when it becomes a liquid at 2100+ degrees. But I also love controlling that movement. Making it stop on a dime, or drip exactly where I want it to drip. This piece does both. I always say glaze is the first consideration in pottery, not the last. We need to shape the clay with the glaze properties in mind. An ash glaze needs bumps and divots to collect in, a celadon glaze needs pooling points to show off, and a crystalline glaze needs a smooth surface with room to run. Design then build. When I cut the line for this arc above the black texture, I ran my thumbnail against the upper part of the cut, making the slightest lip to direct the glaze to the drip points on either side. I do this all the time, but this one! 😘 I’m afraid there will be a lot of glaze geek posts this week.
