Water Guardians at Batavia Kill”
Installation at Sugar Maples Center for the Creative Arts.
Labor Day 2024
Installing some work made during my making and writing workshop and inspired by my students who reignited my flame as an educator. These water guardians will stand as witness to all the creative spirits that surround this beautiful place inside the Catskills. I’m deeply moved by the way art and writing flows through all of us. Thanks for the guidance and support of @kulvinder_kaur_dhew and @brucedehnert whose generosity and humor fuels this endeavor. Thank you to the @catskillmountainfoundation for creating a dynamic vision of art. But thanks most to the students for taking a risk with me to work in language and clay.
The waters will rise and these guardians will return to the earth. The energy of art and nature renews itself.
Painting with clay slip on cardboard. Porcelain stoneware peeling off.
At night I wake up and write down phrases and words I don’t want to forget. The words that won’t allow me to sleep. The following morning I review them. Here they are today without explanation:
1. Next gas twenty-five miles.
2. Don’t use big words.
3. Four avocados for a dollar.
4. It smells like rats in here.
These are the beginnings of new work that might be forgotten months from now, but I’m grateful for these signposts and ideas that push me forward. These phrases become tiny fires set inside my imagination.
