I chased a storm as far as I could into the mountains yesterday before common sense turned me back home as the temperature dropped and the rain turned to snow and sleet. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I have never felt this drive like that before—irresistible, a bit dangerous, so full of connection and inspiration and reminders of passion I’ve filtered through “safer” energy this year. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Everything is anticipation now… for what I don’t know, but I feel that something beautiful is coming. Something full, and fulfilling. Something I have been almost afraid to want, for fear it won’t last. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But I want it, and there’s no going back from that. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I love how the world awakens things in us we don’t quite know are there. Reentry. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ _____ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ My first day back to my daily work since France, and I had an early coaching call with the inimitable @sallyhardie before I worked my work hours for my clients and caught up on little things and reworked my “to-do” list into an “I trust myself with this” list (which was a remarkable mindset shift; you should try it!), and put my IG post off until the day was done. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ (My 8yo asked me what a run-on sentence is this morning; I may need to show her that one. 👆🏻😅) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s nice to be in my own home. To feel my way through here on the other side of that Really Big Thing (speaking at @legacy.workshop) and to find how much it has deepened even the small things I am doing now. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I feel very rich—all the way into my soul—and very tired, and very present. This was the moment I cried in France.⁣ ⁣ _____⁣ ⁣ ⁣ There were so many moments I might have cried—when we were jetlagged-exhausted and couldn’t sleep, when we did five circles in our rental around a restaurant after we landed and the kids were so very hungry after 14 hours of travel (and no sleep), when someone asked me to take on a responsibility I wasn’t expecting—but it was *this* moment that broke the dam.⁣ ⁣ The poppies just there, at the side of the road, on our last day, after we’d said goodbye to our beautiful hosts at @le_moulin_de_vaugency .⁣ ⁣ It was the easy beauty offering itself up to whoever would stop for it that finally brought me to tears.⁣ ⁣ ⁣ _____⁣ ⁣ ⁣ I love my Charleston house here in California. We love @wasserzapfen ’s job. But this place that spends the year sucking the beauty out, draining the life from every bit of softness… Living here, trying to make a home here — it is the hardest thing I have ever done.⁣ ⁣ And once in a while—maybe once every couple of years—I just feel how hard it is to be a lover in this place. To pour from a cup that is almost always empty. Goodness knows, I am shooting enough. ⁣ ⁣ But I am also stretching myself so much in so many ways, it’s hard to feel present enough to know even what to share.⁣ ⁣ I love working as an introvert from home (and believe me, I am grabbing small moments for that where I can here!!), but I am also loving getting caught up in the wild creative energy that is born when you bring a group of artists together. Every time I visit Europe, I am startled to find how my body settles into itself, as if it remembers something I have never consciously known. The homesickness I feel every day at “home” in California disappears when I am half a world away. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I know I come from refugees who fled France for religious freedom. I come from farmers in The Netherlands who immigrated away from Europe only a few years before The Great War. I know I have Polish blood in my bones, along with the ache of a Russian occupation. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Epigenetics fascinates me, things my body knows that are not my own, a kind of rest my DNA is aching for that I can’t explain. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I feel I may be on a journey to heal this somehow, for the women who are in me—my mother, my grandmothers, my great-great-great grandmothers—and for myself too. I wonder what I may be healing for my daughters too. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I watch the sunsets here in France, and it feels like home.
