Hello! I’m a Drarry writer who has recently gotten into recording podfics. My latest project is recording different meta analysis of Drarry, HP and fandom. I’m curious if you would be willing to allow me to record one or more of your meta posts? Please let me know and thanks so much!
Ps. If interested in the format, etc. here is my most recent work: https://archiveofourown.org/works/62168845
Wow! That's so awesome that you're doing that. I'm incredibly flattered that you want to include some of my content. (Also, thank you so much for asking me for permission first; that was very considerate of you). My answer is a resounding yes! Feel free to record whatever you want from my blog. Just please give me credit for it.

hi! i love your podfic and i had a question about your process if you're cool with talking about it a bit? how do you do your dialogue and get the voices consistent? you do a different voice/tone for shiro and keith, for instance - do you record their lines separately, or at the same time as the narration? i'm new to podficcing and trying to figure out what works best for me, so i'd love to hear how you approach it! thank you for all your lovely work.
Hi!
My process is recording the voices at the same time as the narration. I record directly in to Audacity so that allows me to edit as I go, especially if I don't like the delivery. So I'll deliver a line and if I don't like it, I'll record a few different versions. But if I feel I've lost the tone of a character, I do go back to previous lines and listen to them to try and match it up moving forward.
For Keith and Shiro specifically, I use how they say each other's names as the basis of their tones. So if I don't feel like Keith sounds right, I say Shiro's name as I remember it from the show and same with Shiro, and then deliver the line. LOL
I have considered doing the narration separately from the speaking voices but I'm lazy and don't feel up to going back to do them separately. 😅
Ultimately, I still haven't really found an absolute set in stone way of recording, but try something different if it doesn't seem to be working at the moment. I hope that helps you out and I am so glad you decided to do podficcing! And thank you for listening to mine!
18: How many podfic WIPs do you have right now? Talk about one of them
I really just have one WIP that I'm actively working on, and it's Spilt Ink, Spilt Blood! It's of a twilight longfic but in a way that fixes the worldbuilding to something that makes a lot more sense and is also more interesting to read than canon twilight? I started reading the fic last year and just had to turn it into a podfic, it's so good with the OC main character (an adult, not a teenager, which - that alone is an improvement xD) thrown into twilight and just very realistically suffering through their circumstances, and the different POVs of canon main and side characters are so fun to read... Also the main character is Welsh and shipped with Jasper who's Texan and there's a bunch of Spanish thrown in too, so voiceacting the accents is super fun for me :D
I'm ten chapters in now, out of 52+, and I'm trying for weekly updates which I've managed so far, it'll definitely be a Long long project and I might take at least a week off here and there (for example when the other podfic events like summer podfic swap and pod together happen) but I'm honestly just so excited about this, and I love the routine of the weekly chapters! It Is a bit intimidating in just How long it'll be - several years at least if I stick to the schedule - I think the longest I've worked on a podfic in the past was months and not years, at least unless we're counting several parts of a series, and even that I think was just about a year... But I think it's worth it, the story is really that good!
I've already gotten some really nice comments on the podfic, someone has listened to the first five chapters several times And told me I sound like a professional voiceactor, so I'm super happy with how the project is turning out, even though (of course xD it's podfic lmao) not too many people are interested in it so far
20: How do you start/end your podfics? (Do you include the full header? Do you do notes? Bloopers?)
I read the title and author first, usually + 'read by lilolilyrae', then I miight add a 'a xyfandom fanfiction/podfic' and if it's for an event 'for xy event' but usually I just jump right in with the summary
I don't read tags (though I'm considering adding ones when they're not search tags but rather rambling tags? I mean, if you've found the podfic already you don't need search tags anymore, but the rambling might be fun. I mean, I could include the fandom so if ppl download they'll still know it, but I think it's usually obvious early on, plus I could also add it to metadata... Idk
Whether or not I read author's notes usually depends on whether it's fic relevant or more personal about the author.
I end the fic with just the last word of the main text (or the end note if I add it), I usually don't say 'The End', though I have to say when we all said it together during epf convention recordings that was super fun!
What I do tend to add at the end and also the beginning and sometimes during time jumps and such is theme music! Often just the main theme of the fandom or something else from the soundtrack, sometimes a song that's mentioned in the story.
55: What’s your favorite part of the podficcing process?
The voiceacting! I don't just read the text, I do different voices for different (main) characters, and I also like to act out the emotions and such. Specifically what's my favorite is when it's a character I've already voiced for a while, several podfics in the same fandom or several chapters into a long podfic, and I can do the voice without thinking about it, and it's just fun!
Some of my favorite characters to voice were the little flying-monkey-like monster Andy from 00q fic Project Monster, babygay Draco from Leo Inter Serpentes, Ilya in all Heated Rivalry podfics I've voiced him in, Good Omens Crowley in Smooth Sharks, and Isa Swan in my current twilight project! I'm struggling with Jasper's Texan accent, but Isa's accent is a delight! Oh, and - not a podfic, but a book I read to my sister on vacation some years back - I gave Finbar Wrong of the Skulduggery Pleasant series the silliest funnest voice, that was a great time xD
I've also started to really enjoy singing in podfics, I've had song parts in the warehouse 13 fic Thank You For The Music, and I specifically recorded a chapter of the Star Wars longfic Knives and Spices because it has singing!
Thank you so much for these questions, this was fun!
Do you mind if I ask how you typically edit your podfics and choose songs for them? I’ve been trying to get into doing more myself but using GarageBand to edit is not my friend 😅
Omg i'm so sorry, I saw this and then I got sick and forgot to reply!!
I use audacity to edit, which is what I know a lot of podficcers use. It's free, which is the main benefit, and it can do a LOT, and there's a lot of tutorials on youtube for it, too!
For music, I usually just use mp3s downloads (youtube is your friend here), and then select clips in audacity and copy them into the podfic.
I have a basic podfic walkthru of my process here, if this is helpful?

And I'm also on discord (same username) so if you have a discord, feel free to reach out if you need any help! Or just ask here, that works too, I just check my messages here less frequently. :)
Your podfic to the Harry Potter story with Gordon Ramsey!
Aww thanks for the ask, anon! And sorry for not answering any sooner, I didn't check my tumblr inbox in a while 😅 I suppose this is for the fanfic ask thingy I posted a while ago? Which questions? Oh well, I'll just do them all xD
(This ask is about a podfic by me of @imagitory 's fanfic Harry Potter and the Lack of Lamb Sauce, so I won't be able to answer any storyline related questions)
1: What inspired you to write record the fic this way?
I loved the original tumblr post with HP and Gordon Ramsay, and was thrilled when I saw that someone was writing a fanfic for it! So I kept checking on the progress, totally fell in love with the story- and as I had recently found out that my phone actually has a decent audio recording quality, I started to podfic it!
3: What’s your favorite line voice of narration?
I always love giving characters different voices, in this case especially Arjuna's waveyness and Rose's squeaky voice (though with the latter I'm still constantly worried that it might be a tad too much :s)
5: What part was hardest to write record?
Apart from the singing, which Tory thankfully did herself so I didn't have to post my awful singing voice? XD
The editing was really the hardest part, not because it's hard to figure out but because it feels like work instead of fun to me, I don't actually enjoy sitting in front of my laptop listening to my own voice for hours on end trying to stay alert to notice and edit out any mistakes..
6: What makes this podfic special or different from all your other fics?
It's so looooong!
8: Did any real people or events inspire any part of it?
Some of the oc-characters' voices are inspired by real people! And I did watch some YT vids of Ramsay to try to get the voice right, but idk whether I got any close to it...
9: Were there any alternate versions of this podfic?
Yesss, I re-recorded some chapters, especially the first few because I had first recorded them in one take and without editing, and it's hard to afterwards edit mistakes out of something that was initially recorded without the intention of editing, because it's missing pauses and repeated sentences where there was a mistake etc... Plus i just think I got better over time and the first chapters just felt very bad â„¢ in comparison to the rest
11: What do you like best about this fic?
Some of the sound effects!
12: What do you like least about this fic?
That I don't think I'll ever be able to write something like this myself :P
Okay no seriously the fic is so awesome, and apart from some jealousy I can't find anything wrong with it!
When it comes to my recording: eh, that I hadn't been able to edit out all the background noise?
15: What did you learn from writing recording this fic?
A lot of audacity editing skills! And I think my (voice-) acting skills got better again as well, after not having practiced much for two years before that...

Hello! So my first podfic seems to have a better sound quality than my next two. Would anyone know why? I’m assuming i’m using the normalization/noise reduction/limiter too much.
Hey, Happy Thanksgiving. I love all the podfics you've shared with listeners and thankful for the time you devote to fandom. It's just comforting to hear your voice, a story about people finding each other added to to it is pure ear orgasm.
Happy Thanksgiving to you too, anon! I received this message at the perfect time—while I was at the store buying a new mic, since my old one has started having some issues—and I'm happy to report that I've have 2 recording sessions since then and have some stuff that I plan to finish editing tomorrow and start posting soon. One is a Glee project and one is a Brooklyn Nine-Nine project, and I am incredibly attached to both of them in different ways and so excited to share them. I hope they will bring you joy like your message brought me!
When I first started in American Idol, I used a Karaoke Revolution microphone that I already had laying around the house. These are like $10 and I was perfectly satisfied with the sound quality at the time.
Later, when I realized that this podfic hobby was something I wanted to stick with and invest in, I upgraded to a Blue Snowball for around $50. That sounded way better to me, but it needed to be plugged into my computer to record, so I had issues with computer fan noise while using it.
Eventually I convinced someone to get me a Zoom H2 for Christmas, which is what I still use today. It has a beautiful sound (although I had to play with the settings a bit first to make it sound how I wanted), and it records onto an SD card that only later gets loaded onto my computer, so I don't need to worry about computer fan noise. It cost about $150, but considering how much I use it, it's worth it to me. They actually don't make the Zoom H2 anymore, but the Zoom H2n is the next model up and now sells for the same price that Zoom H2 used to.
I also briefly used a Zoom H1 for some reason a couple years ago when my H2 was acting up. That has a built-in hard drive so you also don't need to plug it into the computer while you record, the sound is pretty nice though not as good as the H2 imo, and it's a little less expensive at $99.
