hey I have a question and I was hoping it was ok to ask here. so I have a denim jacket and it has a sherpa lining and I want to sew a pocket on the inside to hold my phone and such i have made the pocket but I am unsure of how to sew it in to the jacket because the lining is thick any idea how i would do this (btw i dont have a sewing machine) thank you for your time
I had to check out my sherpa pleather jacket to see what you were up against, and yeah I can see it being a wee bit of a problem.
So I’m assuming you’re making a patch pocket, as anything else would require you to rip open the lining to get inside. You can easily handstitch your pocket onto the lining with a slip stitch:
To do the patch, the hand that is holding the jacket will need to feel when you’ve poked too far into the fuzzy fabric and into the denim. And you’ll have to flip it over to check every now and then to be sure it’s not showing thru to your denim. As for the fuzzy side use your needle to gently push aside the bit of fuzz apart until you can see down to the netting. If you can’t tell if you got it or not, gently tug your needle when you’ve pulled your thread through to see it the stitch will hold. If you’re not sure, make another stitch near the first stitch before moving on. If this is a pocket you plan to use often and wash the jacket a lot, I recommend knotting the thread often and keep your stitches on the small side for a secure pocket. You might need to switch to a longer needle if you have issues with reaching the netting. And when pinning your pocket down try to only catch the Sherpa and not the denim, that should help with not sewing through to the denim.
Hope I helped!
