Simon tugs nervously at the tie around his neck. It feels too tight, too close to his hot skin. He’s not used to wearing ties. Heck, the last time he wore one was probably at his Bar Mitzvah.

It’s a cool tie, though. It’s matte cobalt blue with lots of pugs making out the pattern.

His mom had close to begged him to pick another one, but he was very set on this particular tie. Maybe it had something to do with the person who gifted it to him at his last birthday. Maybe.

The tie is still uncomfortably tight around his neck and he wonders if he should just take it off, but it is a school dance after all, and he doesn’t want to stick out more than he already does.

He shimmies another finger between the soft fabric and his suit jacket, and pulls slightly. A thread is threatening to come loose from the tip of the tie, and he’s just trapped it between his thumb and index finger when––

“That’s it. I’m calling the police.”

Simon spins around on his heel and almost falls down the stairs as he does so.

“You are way too gorgeous to just be walking around like this. What if you blind someone with your beauty? That’s just irresponsible.”

what makes you feel warm inside? sipping tea while i turn the page of a well-worn favorite book and rain patters outside my half-open window. singing sister suffragette and playing charades and knowing i found my soulmates ten years ago. scotch and trader joe’s chocolate, torn beer tabs and being better than claritin, lazy sundays when the sheets half-cover me and his arms hold me tight.

what’s your favorite halloween tradition? taking photos with my friends before, during, and after we go out to celebrate.  

what’s the last thing you learned? hard work pays off, even if it takes years and a dozen people telling you can do it even when you don’t believe you can.
