Q: The relationship between Simon and Jack is so complicated and you have those brilliant diary entries in voiceover that really talk about how at boarding school, every time, when everybody else got picked up by their parents, it would be just the two of them and that was the one time that he would get Jack's attention and Jack would laugh at his jokes. And then it's so heartbreaking to hear that even before the kids came back, he would start pulling away from him. How was that really helpful to have in the script? You know, particularly looking at episode 3 to understand why Simon reviles Jack but also still wants his approval?
A: It's just masterful what Jack Thorne has written. Like, the complexity of the relationship, the power dynamic, the way that whilst Jack is obviously sort of dominant and Jack would consider Simon to be much weaker, Simon still has this sort of vantage point of getting at Jack because Simon is the only one who really knows who Jack is. Like, beyond the attempt to prove himself. Simon knows why he attempts to prove himself. [...] with the voiceovers, you still get that in-depth look at what [Simon]'s thinking, why he does what he does. Mine and Lox's relationship, I think, is very sort of evident on screen. [...] The fact that it's genuine and that we're so close means we can explore these places with a sort of safety net because we know that we're best mates and I know he doesn't hate me... Not that Jack does hate Simon! I think there's a bit of resentment but only because Simon knows that Jack doesn't hate him.
i love the choir flashback so much bc you have jack actually being so sweet, literally looking at simon while he's singing about holiness meanwhile simon's mystical ass already starts to see the outline of the beast in jack and feels his doomed martyrish destiny fall on him
saw some tiktok person hcing that jack was simon's seven minutes and it's even worse when you remember that the last part of him echoing after his death is his journal entry about jack abandoning him... so it's kinda canon in the most cruel way
jimon arts by m_e_n_g_e_l are sooo good, i will never get over it. and the "what if" jack forced simon to join his tribe after not be able to take his rejections anymore is so good. makes me think of a whole universe where he tries so hard, tries to show his bravery and strength but nothing gets to simon and he just gets more and more volatile not understanding what's he's doing wrong, what's he's supposed to do, not pausing for a moment to realize the strength of the heart is the kind simon needs.

"he is nicer than people know."
"simon knows him the way the other boys don't. and he knows simon."
"i know your truth and my truth, and you may dress up all sorts of things to the other boys, but i've sat with you crying at 8 years old when our fathers didn't come for us."
"simon still has this sort of vantage point of getting at jack because simon is the only one who really knows who jack is."
"they just get each other, and they understand each other on a really different level."
they don't make it a point that simon knows him, they make it a point that he knows who jack is and sees the real him while nobody else does or ever did. my steak too juicy. my lobster too buttery. πππ
