Sub-Saharan Africa 77 years ago today: Three French Empires (23 Nov 1942) https://buff.ly/2QFrrkN In November 1942 the Allies landed in Vichy French North Africa and defeated the Axis in Egypt, prompting Germany to occupy Vichy France. In Algiers, Vichy Admiral Darlan agreed to join the Allies, but as a representative of Vichy France not as part of the Free French. This move was accepted by the United Statesâwhich distrusted de Gaulleâand French West Africa, but rejected as treason by the Vichy government in occupied France. As a result three rival French factions briefly coexisted: Vichy France, Free France, and Darlan's High Commission of France in Africa. #1940s #1942 #20thcentury #africa #africanhistory #axisallies #vichyfrance #freefrench #frenchwestafrica #frenchempire #historia #historian #historybuff #historyclass #historymaker #historynerd #map #charlesdegaulle #november23 #secondworldwar #strategy #subsaharanafrica #britishempire #worldhistory #worldwar2 #worldwarii #ww2 #wwii #todayinhistory #thisdayinhistory (at Dakar, Senegal) https://www.instagram.com/p/B5MxX8-g-uY/?igshid=7inv9hpgcijm

The Arctic 180 years ago today: Canadian Rebellions (23 Nov 1837) http://omniatlas.com/maps/arctic/18371123/ By the 1830s, the British colonies of Upper and Lower Canada were growing in population but still found themselves dominated by local trading oligarchies. Increasing dissatisfaction led to calls for government reform and rebellions in 1837. Although the first revolts were quickly suppressed, many rebels fled to the US border and continued the fight from there. #arctic #history #welovemaps #1830s #1837 #canada #canadianhistory #france #greatbritain #uk #britain #britishempire #maine #maps #newbrunswick #november #november23 #quebec #unitedstates (at Toronto, Ontario)

Blood in the Streets of Paris: The Assassination That Divided France
On November 23, 1407, Louis I, Duke of Orléans, the younger brother of King Charles VI of France, was brutally assassinated on the streets of Paris in one of the most infamous political murders of the Middle Ages. As King Charles VI struggled with severe bouts of mental illness that left him unable to govern effectively, rival factions competed for control of the French crown. Louis, supported by Queen Isabeau of Bavaria, sought to dominate the royal government, bringing him into direct conflict with the powerful Burgundian faction.
The conspiracy was orchestrated by John the Fearless, Duke of Burgundy, who viewed Louis as both a political rival and a threat to Burgundian influence. As Louis rode home through Paris after visiting the queen, armed men ambushed him, striking him repeatedly with swords and axes before leaving his body in the street. Rather than deny responsibility, John openly admitted to ordering the assassination, claiming it was justified as an act against a corrupt and tyrannical noble.
The murder shattered any remaining hope of peace within the French royal court. The rivalry between the Armagnac supporters of the House of Orléans and the Burgundians erupted into a bloody civil war that weakened France during the Hundred Years' War. Twelve years later, the cycle of vengeance continued when John the Fearless himself was assassinated in 1419, proving that the murder of Louis had unleashed decades of violence that forever altered French history.
