Sub-Saharan Africa 77 years ago today: Three French Empires (23 Nov 1942) https://buff.ly/2QFrrkN In November 1942 the Allies landed in Vichy French North Africa and defeated the Axis in Egypt, prompting Germany to occupy Vichy France. In Algiers, Vichy Admiral Darlan agreed to join the Allies, but as a representative of Vichy France not as part of the Free French. This move was accepted by the United States—which distrusted de Gaulle—and French West Africa, but rejected as treason by the Vichy government in occupied France. As a result three rival French factions briefly coexisted: Vichy France, Free France, and Darlan's High Commission of France in Africa. #1940s #1942 #20thcentury #africa #africanhistory #axisallies #vichyfrance #freefrench #frenchwestafrica #frenchempire #historia #historian #historybuff #historyclass #historymaker #historynerd #map #charlesdegaulle #november23 #secondworldwar #strategy #subsaharanafrica #britishempire #worldhistory #worldwar2 #worldwarii #ww2 #wwii #todayinhistory #thisdayinhistory (at Dakar, Senegal) https://www.instagram.com/p/B5MxX8-g-uY/?igshid=7inv9hpgcijm

Europe 76 years ago today: Eve of Barbarossa (21 Jun 1941) http://omniatlas.com/maps/europe/19410621/ British forces successfully ended German influence in Iraq and Syria, but narrowly failed to defeat a German airborne invasion of Crete. For Hitler though, this was all a sideshow - his focus was now on his 3 million man military build-up for the invasion of the Soviet Union. #europe #history #welovemaps #1940s #1941 #crete #europeanhistory #finland #france #freefrench #germany #greatbritain #iraq #june #june21 #lebanon #maps #syria #worldwarii (at Białystok, Poland)

Europe 74 years ago today: Aftermath of Stalingrad (19 Mar 1943) http://omniatlas.com/maps/europe/19430319/ By February it was all over for the Sixth Army at Stalingrad as the Soviet offensive gathered momentum along much of the Eastern Front. However the rapid advance left the Russians overextended, allowing Germany to regroup and launch a punishing counterattack in the Ukraine. #europe #history #welovemaps #1940s #1943 #europeanhistory #freefrench #germany #greatbritain #italy #libya #maps #march #march19 #newzealand #russia #tunisia #ussr #worldwarii (at Volgograd, Russia)
Europe 74 years ago today: Tunisia Campaign (22 Feb 1943) http://omniatlas.com/maps/europe/19430222/ The Allied successes in North Africa had persuaded Germany to land forces in Tunisia. In February, they were joined by Rommel and his troops, who had fled the British across Libya. Rommel quickly returned to the attack, smashing the inexperienced US II Corps at Kasserine Pass. Despite this setback, the Allies recovered and were soon advancing on Tunis. #europe #history #welovemaps #1940s #1943 #allies #europeanhistory #february #february22 #france #freefrench #germany #greatbritain #italy #libya #maps #morocco #russia #unitedstates #worldwarii (at Kasserin, Al Qasrayn, Tunisia)
