This is our Voltron: Legendary Defender rewrite! This is a current work in progress with 160 chapters, and we do have another rewrite currently ongoing. For our main author, this has been a passion project for over 3 years now. We are mainly using this blog to get it out there, and recruiting betas once we get closer to actually writing.
Our major themes that we will be addressing throughout the series will be identity, choice, teamwork, and the consequences and effects of war from multiple different perspectives. We are not currently on Ao3, but will be when we get to that point of our process.
Our major author is Sol (@packcoventhing), who uses it/he pronouns. He loves character interactions, development, and personality showcases. Heās also a digital artist, and if there are any digital images in this that are not cited, they likely come from his art app! Heās 19 years old and absolutely insane about Doctor Who and Voltron (obviously. why else would we be here).
Our co-author is Lief (@sfhppjmc), who uses they/it pronouns. They like evolutions of relationships, culture, influences of anything around them, and adding in representation of all kinds. They are 18 years old and loves Doctor Who, recently recruited to hell. They only recently finished watching VLD after being dragged.
We are contactable through tumblr if you have any questions.
The major list of things we are changing/including are listed below:
We are changing most of the plot
The endgame ships are Klance, Hunay, Shalluratt, and side Ezor x Zethrid
(The primary author, Sol, is gay. He also has a handful of fixtional women he'd date if they were real. Shiro can date alien princess and his friend all he wants.)
Lotor has been overhauled and has been given a redemption arc
Keith and Acxa are twins
Pidge will be genderfluid
Keith and Lance and Romelle are trans
Technology will become (hopefully) more based in actual theoretical physics
Altean magic system will be overhauled and given an actual structure (gasp!)
The lions CAN and WILL turn into actual lions
The relationships between the main team will become more developed and more important
Shiro's PTSD and disability will be handled in a more respectful and realistic manner
Allura gets the character development the show pretended she had
Lotor's redemption arc DOES NOT involve a romance arc
Adam's existence and death will make an impact on Shiro and Keith
We will meet and interact with Galra citizens
Voltron will not be created by Alfor
The story takes place over a longer length of time for the paladins
General pacing fixes
& more!

Okay and actually on time today it's @vldtenyearanniversaryfest day 4! What Pidge (and Matt) are up to post canon time
AO3 mirror
~*~
"Mail for you," Matt mentioned, mug of coffee in hand and his long hair an absolute mess, not having brushed it yet.
"Oh, sweet, probably my name change papers," Pidge said, leaning back in their office chair and taking the envelope from their brother.
"You really are going through with it huh?" Matt asked warmly, taking a seat at the computer terminal next to theirs and smiling fondly at them. They kicked him in the ankle for posterity's sake, an absent gesture.
"I mean, the only people who really call me 'Katie' anymore are mom and dad," they said as they rifled through the small mountain of stuff they'd piled on their workstation. They really needed to clean this thing sometime. Or at least declutter it. "Might as well make it official." They found a novelty pen Keith had given them, the tip shaped like a knife, and y'know what it'd work as a letter opener in a pinch. Sure enough, it was the court order, signed by the judge, with Pidge Holt's brand new government-recognized name staring back up at them.
"Sweet," they mentioned, setting the paper aside and returning to their computer monitor.
"You're gonna lose it if you leave it there," Matt pointed out, sipping at his coffee.
"Mind your business," Pidge countered. They were researching whether light's property of self-torque was what made interstellar communications work the way they did. 13,000 years ago when near-instant communications across lightyears' worth of distance had been developed, people had found something that worked, but hadn't actually discovered why it worked. It was the acetaminophen of Pidge's field, and they were damn well going to be the researcher who finally cracked the case on it.
N-7 joined them with a hairbrush and pressed a robotic kiss to Matt's forehead before she started in on his unruly bedhead, Matt closing his eyes and humming contentedly, leaning into her touch. Pidge, once again for posterity's sake more than anything, made an ugly gagging noise at their gooey romantic sappiness.
"If you keep making that face, it's gonna stick like that," Matt mumbled without opening his eyes.
"Good," Pidge returned bluntly, not bothering to point out that he couldn't see what face they were making, or even to look away from their computer screen.
"Allura still swinging by tonight?"
"As long as being the beating heart that pulses the lifeblood of all things through this and every other reality doesn't take too much out of her, yeah," Pidge said. Which was mostly sarcastic, since that was Allura's every moment, and it wasn't like a long day could match up against the cosmic equivalent of what was essentially a goddess at this point. She'd make herself and Lotor a pair of physical forms and the two would pop into the material plane from time to time, always happy to come visit their friends and catch them up on what was going on elsewhere in reality. It was a good excuse to get the gang together; Lance was always so busy being an interstellar celebrity, spreading the legends and the facts of Voltron far and wide with Coran as his manager, Keith and Shiro were always out roadtripping around space with Kosmo, and Hunk was renowned far and wide for his diplomatic expertise, uniting essentially the entire known universe under the coalition's banner with good meals and warm company.
"That'll be nice," Matt said, getting up with a stretch and pressing an absent kiss to N-7's cheek.
"Yeah," Pidge agreed, still fiddling with the communications' technology, "I'm looking forward to it."

The voltron official tiktok account lowkey confirming nonbinary Pidge in 2024 by using they/them pronouns on a post about the team's coffee orders was not on my bingo card, but I'm not complaining
Screw it. *Genderfluids your Lance* Post s8. Fix it.
Lance thought his Altean markings were cosmetic. Nothing more. Nothing less. A gift from Allura, leaving a piece of her with him, to look back and remember with fondness her company. As if he could ever forget a girl as incredible as her.
Itās not until much later he realises itās something more. That maybe Allura gave a portion more than he expected. He stares, face to face with his mirror. Something off. Something strange. Something that grabs his attention before he really knows what heās looking at.
His ears slowly shift back to human. But they were there long enough. He saw the Altean ears.
āIncredible,ā Coran says when Lance broaches this to him, and after multiple attempts at trying at failing at repeating what happened in the mirror. At last he succeeds. āYouāre shifting just like an Altean.ā
āIām not turning Altean, am I?ā he panics. Heās pretty attached to being a human and all.
āHaha! Donāt be ridiculous number three, you canāt just āturn Altean.ā Good one! Turn Altean, he says. Thatās one to remember for an open mike.ā Then Coran takes one look at his genuine distress and sobers. āRest assured, my boy, youāre one hundred percent earthling, ears and all. Allura wouldnāt change you so completely when she loved you the way you are. It just seems she passed our chameleon-like abilities over to you. I canāt say Iāve ever heard anything like this ever documented before, but Alluraā¦ā
āHas a way of accomplishing the possible,ā Lance offers when Coranās eyes grow distant, bittersweet.
āYes,ā agrees Coran. Something proud, something sombre, āThat she did.ā
***
Lance practices often, following Coranās guidance. Even Romelle drops by at Coranās request, eager to show someone the ropes.
āIn the colony, we had little need to shift as our ancestors had. Our only home had been there, tucked away in a corner of the universe. We understood little of the outside world except what Lotor brought us. Even so, it was an ability we never lost. When you have mastered it, itās like walking. It becomes natural. To some more than others,ā she says, a surprisingly patient teacher. He wonders where this side of her was when she was trying to get him to teach her to pilot. āYou may be the āothersā! But that okay. My⦠my brother Bandor was the same.ā
For such a bright supernova of a person, it is easy to forget that, like Coran, Romelle has been touched by grief. And grief again.
āYou strike me as an adaptable person, pointy chin. Like rivers and oceans, it has made you you. I have full confidence in your abilities. And if Allura were here.ā She smiles, and it is pain, but beauty. A flower unfurling in the wake of a storm. āI know she would say the same.ā
***
He finds himself slipping into other forms like a glove. It becomes easier, a swifter motion just as Romelle had said.
Itās freeing, in a way. To walk as something so slightly adjacent to him. A Lance of another life. Altean, balmeran, olkari, puigian, anything he can think of.
He loves being Plaxumās species the most. A mer. Beneath the waves, it feels like coming home. Heās a missile underwater, swimming loops around coral.
Dreams really do come true.
***
Thereās something about transforming that pulls him that much closer to Allura. Her quintessence sings to him, and his skin dances. He feels alive as he hasnāt in a long time.
Happier maybe. Or that much closer to it.
He wishes he could take a photo of Keith the second he catches sight of Lance, a good extra foot on him, and purple as a plum.
āSo this is a⦠thing,ā says Keith eventually. And what an observation that is. Lance explains.
āDonāt let Hunk catch you like this,ā is Keithās response, a hint of tired amusement, āHeāll call you Galra Lance and never stop.ā
***
It starts with him shifting into an unilu. He needs the extra hands. Lance doesnāt realise the gender heād chosen until Coran points it out offhandedly. Now, Lance knows that not every species is going to be quite so clear cut as biologically male or female. Some have more some have less. Some wonāt even know what the word gender means. He has experienced a taste of the universe. He knows how vast and diverse it is. When shapeshifting into a species like that, it makes sense his gender isnāt something heād retain.
Female. Heād made himself into a female unilu. It was a matter of size and facial shape. Nothing too strange, no stranger than his body shifting into a skin it wasnāt born into, but noticeable enough.
And isnāt that something.
***
Itās out of curiosity he tries the same as a human. Curiosity and nothing more. Just because he can. Really. Honest.
Lance half expects his girl!sona would just be a carbon copy of Rachel with the added blue scales residing beneath his eyes. But that isnāt who he sees in the mirror.
He sees. Well, he sees himself.
Herself.
She looks, feels, kind of pretty. Which makes sense. Sheās Lance. Of course she looks great. Goes without saying.
Lanceās lip twitches.
***
So. So maybe he throws on the form again. And again. And again. Maybe a little more than he does with any alien species. But can you blame him? Heās just found out he has a free trial at being a girl so quiznack if he isnāt going to try it out.
Her hair is long. Her hair is short. She pulls off both looks well, she thinks. Being a girl is kind of awesome, actually.
Itās not always the case. Sometimes it just isnāt right. But others? Sometimes he finds himself slipping into her without realising it. Itās just what feels right to her in the moment.
Thereās something nice about strangers using āsheā and āherā and they donāt know. They donāt know. Something in her bubbles, giddy, they donāt know.
But Lanceās family do. Pidge does.
They look at Lanceānow once again a boyāand hum, thoughtful, considering.
āAre you are girl?ā they ask. Pidge does not beat around the bush. It throws Lance through enough loops to put him in a spiral.
āNoā, says Lance. But for some reason that doesnāt sound quite right. āI mean. Iām not always. Butāā
āYou are sometimes?ā
āI guess. But itās just shapeshifting. Iām not actuallyāā Lance trails off, lost. āAm I?ā
āDo you want to be?ā Pidge asks, and huh. Does he want to be? Is it really that simple? Heās always seen himself as a guy, and had no problems with that. But.
Well.
ā⦠Maybe. Maybe sometimes.ā
Pidge grins, wild and victorious. āWelcome to the club.ā
(Something in his chest feels lighter. Thereās a cavern, because it has made its mark and stayed. That has not changed. But this is this.
How wonderful it is to find the answers to secrets within oneself. He could have lived his whole life without knowing, a part locked away without him ever knowing there was a lock. But now, how could he?
Itās like heās no longer holding in a breath.)
***
Pidge later tells him itās criminally unfair he can change his body on a whim. They are fine with she, they are, but they are them. Sometimes she is just too much she to match their they.
Lance wonders how much Allura managed to see him. He remembers how close they became, how she became someone heād call a best friend, then a lover. How she perceived him better than most throughout it all. Looked to him and saw greatness where he, despite wanting to be so much more, only saw failure. He wishes he knew what she saw when she looked at him. The person he was. Is. Lance.
If she knew what these markings have done for him. Did she know?
She canāt have done. Lance didnāt even know.
(But if she hadā
Itās not like Lance can ask.)
***
Allura comes back.
She descends like a shooting star, the blinding light of an angelās fall. She falls home and it is at home she stays. Days are bliss. A dream Lance dare not wake from.
āYouāre not dreaming,ā she tells him, soft, and kind, but aching, āIām here. I wonāt leave again. My duty to revive the universe is fulfilled. Iām here to live. And I chose to live with you.ā
He kisses the words from her lips, blissfully sweet. She more than happily complies.
āI never meant to hurt you this much.ā
āYouāre here now,ā Lance says, and it sounds so beautiful spoken out loud like this. How long heās dreamed for such a moment. āThatās all that matters. We can move forwards together.ā
This is their start.
***
It takes a while. But she tells Allura.
Allura kisses her senselessly. Lance loves it.
āThough I canāt take credit for this being my intention, Iām glad you learned more of yourself.ā Alluraās fondness is an ocean she could drown in. āI love the person you are.ā
āYeah?ā
Alluraās hand trails Lanceās ear. āYes. Very much so. Itās an added bonus that I managed fix your ears. You have tried an Altean form, right?ā
Lance jolts. āAllura!ā she protests, a little put out. āWhatās wrong with my ears?ā
āNothing,ā she says, warm and amused. āNothing at all. I find that they have grown on me greatly. Theyāre cute. Just like the rest of my girlfriend.ā
