Theyâd been laughing when the hero had heard the soft double click, thatâs funny...Theyâd thought to themselves, that sounded like...
âDonât move!â They whispered, their face going white as their stomach dropped through the floor.Â
Sidekick hadnât noticed, they were still laughing about some joke the hero had made a moment ago--a lifetime ago now. They began to shift slightly to buckle their seat belt-the heroâs arm shot out and grabbed them hard enough to bruise.Â
âDonât fucking move!â They shouted, their heart beating a wild staccato rhythm in their chest, like a bird trapped in a collapsed cage. Â
Sidekick had stopped laughing, they froze, looking at hero sharply, wincing at the iron grip that hero had on their arm, âWh-whatâs happening?â Theyâd been with hero long enough to know that something was very wrong.Â
âI donât know for sure...â Hero slowly let go of sidekickâs arm and eased out of the passenger seat, opening the door and stepping out disturbing the car as little as possible, when they reached sidekickâs door they opened it gently, barely daring to breath, they glanced up at their long time friend and partner, theyâd gone a little pale, fear swimming in their widened eyes.Â
âJust hold still for me, okay?â when sidekick went to nod they caught themselves just in time and winced instead.Â
âOkay,â They breathed tremulously.Â
Hero crouched by the seat, peering underneath it, when they saw the blinking red and green lights they hissed and swore under their breath.Â
âWhat is it? A snake!?â Sidekick hated snakes as much as the fictional Indiana Jones did, maybe even a little more.Â
âNo, not a snake, thereâs a pressured explosive under the driverâs seat,â the hero stated evenly, a false calm descending over their face, âWhat I need you to do is not panic, stay completely still for me, and Iâll have you out of here in no time okay?âÂ
âEnough with the hero-talk bullshit!â Sidekick squeaked, already starting to panic, âI can see through it!â They took a deep breath, âHow bad is it? Tell me the truth.âÂ
Hero sighed, their hands were shaking, sweat already starting to bead on their forehead, âitâs..Itâs not good sidekick....â They state finally, their voice coming very close to breaking, âItâs one I havenât disarmed before, and I donât know how sensitive it is.âÂ
âOookayy,â sidekick took a measured breath, already starting to feel the strain of holding the same position, their muscles tight with stress, âWhat do we d-do?âÂ
âThereâs only one person I know of who might know how to disarm it...But they also might be the one who planted it.âÂ
âThe antagonist!â Sidekick exclaimed, âhero youâre crazy if you think that theyâl help us without striking some terrible deal thatâs worse.âÂ
Hero shook their head bitterly, âI donât have a choice, Iâll call anti-hero to come and sit with you--â sidekick whimpered slightly cutting them off.Â
âPl-please donât leave me, if Iâve got to be blown into mush Iâd really like the last face I see to be yours,â they didnât make eye contact, swallowing hard.
âSidekick,â hero prompted, âLook at me,â sidekick did, meeting heroâs eyes, the determination he saw there gave him a boost of hope, âYouâre not going to be blown to mush, okay? Iâm sure weâll get another chance to die together really soon,â the tight smile didnât reach their eyes.Â
âPromise?â Sidekick managed a smirk.Â
âI promise, Iâll be back to get you out of there--no matter what.âÂ
