I would like to report that And Tango Makes Three doesn’t suck as a picture book. In a better world, this would be unnecessary to say, but unfortunately ideologically motivated children’s picture books often suck as children’s picture books, with poorly thought out writing and painful art. Heather Has Two Mommies, similarly notorious to Tango, genuinely sucks, with painful art and an almost pointed omission of the pretty common grandparent-headed family that screams sheltered suburban middle class.
Tango is, on its face, a story about a family of penguins in the Central Park Zoo, and it’s perfectly functional as that. My child really likes penguins and frequently plays “baby penguin” so this was a welcome topic and tbh, the only reason I got it from the library in the first place.
