Monday was hard. Work was exhausting. Head office seem to be slow on putting things in place to protect both us and our clients. We still had people bringing their dogs and cats for routine consultations, things that could wait until all this blows over. I am by no means the head vet nurse of the practice, but everyone comes to me as if I am and asks questions I simply don’t know the answers to. I had a receptionist breaking down on one shoulder panicking that she was going to get sick and die of it, on the other shoulder I had a client crying that we were going to close and asking what would she do when she ran out of insulin for her dog. 

In my view only one of them was justified. A young fit healthy receptionist that lives with her equally young fit and healthy boyfriend, separated from clients by a meter wide reception desk (I measured it) is hardly the highest risk individual in the practice. Winding herself up to a state of hysteria definitely didn’t help. I understand it’s a stressful time, I understand that having clients anywhere near you at the moment must be daunting, but we have to provide a service. Wash your hands, don’t touch your face, calmly ask clients to take a step back if you need to. 

I think the hysteria of the country is half the problem at the moment. That and the fact that everyone wants everything immediately. So many people, including the government, are trying so very hard to prioritise and put plans into action yet it simply cannot all be done overnight. The world doesn't work like that!

Though I may be a slight hypocrite saying that really. 

Because I’ve not wanted anything more than to have some answers. 

The veterinary industry as a whole has been incredibly unclear as to where we stand. 

We have a duty of care to the animals. 

But we also have a duty of care to the public. 

Today we finally got some answers. With the lock down last night the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons said that we should be seeing emergencies only. This morning it was agreed in work that the nurses would triage over the phone, the vets would consult over the phone, and only the most urgent of cases would come in for treatment… anything else could wait until, well, who knows when really?

Most clients are understanding, and I wish I could show them how grateful we are for that! Boosters and neutering and nail clips, whilst required aren’t deemed life threatening to the degree that a road traffic accident, or an epeleptic fit, or a GDV. 

So today has been easier, there’s been some sense of understanding and direction for what happens now until normality resumes. The mental breakdown that was undoubtedly on its way this morning has been staved off for another day. 

There’s still the fact that my family and friends are all distant, wrapped up in their own worlds and lives and distracted away from conversation. That can wait though I guess, the important ones will come back in time, or so I hope at least. 

All this is just temporary and all I can do for now is take each day as it comes, smile for those that need it, and keep my chin up. 

After all, just the rest of this week and then I have half a week off. 

The night was still. The streetlamps illuminated the abandoned roads. The windows in the shops and houses were all dark. The world was asleep.

Everyone, except Yusuke Urameshi.

He stood beneath Keiko’s bedroom window, his hands in his jacket pocket. A chill breeze rushed through the air, causing Yusuke to shudder.

So, he’d texted Keiko.

She didn’t answer. She was probably sleeping, Yusuke guessed.

Still, that hadn’t stopped him from throwing on his shoes and his jacket and setting out toward her house. He’d wake her up. Or maybe he wouldn’t. Maybe he’d just silently climb into her bed beside and she would wake in the morning to find him there. Maybe he’d just climb into bed next to her, pull her close and finally be able to sleep.

And there was no shame in that. Cuddling was fucking awesome. After all those nights he’d slept alone in Demon World, away from his friends, away from her, curling up next to a warm body was the freaking best. Besides, she was his girlfriend—nay, his fiancé. Yusuke stood as still as a ghost while his eyes grew accustomed to the darkness. Slowly, he was able to make her out. Her head was pressed firmly down against her pillow, her eyes closed shut tightly, lips slightly agape.

He could just make out the steady rise and fall of her chest and see where her hands disappeared beneath her blanket.

For a moment, Yusuke thought about leaving. He’d walked in on a very private moment. He asked himself, what would she do if she noticed I was here?

And he had another thought. What would she do if she noticed him?

Yusuke smiled. Either Keiko was distracted enough that she hadn’t heard Yusuke at all or he was even stealthier than he thought. He assumed the former. If she was wide awake she’d have definitely heard him.

“Is that the social media thing the boys set up?”

Her eyes snapped up to him immediately, one hand closing the app as she clutched the datapad to her chest.

He knew from the light in her eyes that he was in trouble. It was the same look Gordon had when he was up to mischief and the rest of the family was about to fall foul of a prank.

“What is it?”

She pursed her lips, suddenly fighting the grin she had been wearing.

“Nothing.”

“No, you’ve seen something,” he stepped around the desk, reaching a hand out for her datapad, “what was it?”

“Nothing,” she persisted, scooting the chair backwards, “ThunderDaddy.”

He dove for the tablet as she darted from the chair, ever agile as she stretched her arm out of his reach with a cackle.

Sitting at the kitchen table, Gordon blinked at Scott, “what was all that about?”

Scott simply shook his head as their parents laughter faded down the pathway towards the beach, “Remember the Thirstbot?”

Something had happened, something big that had left Mom speechless and a look on his father’s face that Scott knew better than to cross. 

“Dad, wha--”

A single finger held up was enough to cut him off, Jeff’s focus elsewhere for a moment.

“Eos I need--”

“I have already advised Lucy of appropriate flights to San Diego, and altered your submitted flight plan. I have also briefed Sally Tracy of a requirement that she collect Alan from school this evening.”

“San Diego?” Scott stepped forward, fractions of pieces falling into place, “Gordon?”

Jeff nodded slowly, crossing the room to him, “There’s been an accident. We don’t have details yet.”

Scott sucked in a breath, “What kind of accident Dad?”

His father’s hands were solid and sure on his shoulders, grey-blue eyes searching his own. Scott didn’t like what he saw there, not when he could see his own fear reflected back at him. Dad got scared, Scott knew that much from the attack on the TV Twenty One that had almost taken him down, but he showed it in the same kind of flippancy that both John and Gordon wore when facing things. There should have been sharp wit and a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes, a shrug of his shoulders preventing the weight of the world from settling there. 

There shouldn’t have been the slightest sign of tears as his father shook his head and whispered his answer to Scott.
