I overheard my partner saying, "am I looking at Lord of The Rings or Chronicles of Narnia???"
We’ve got a Prime Minister voted in by less than 0.5% of the population, who once referred to “cheering crowds of flag-waving piccaninnies”, a Foreign Secretary who didn’t realise the Dover-Calais link was important for trade and a Home Secretary who once called for the reintroduction of the death penalty, held dodgy meetings with foreign politicians while lying about being on holiday and who’s generally politically somewhere to the right of Darth Vader but, y’know, we have to focus on those really big priorities...
On This Day in History September 5, 1698: After undertaking his tour of Western Europe. Peter the Great imposes a tax on beards in an effort to modernize Russia.
The tax applied to all men (except the clergy) who were charged 100 roubles a year if they refused to shave their beards. For those who paid the tax, they were given a “beard tokens” as proof of their payment of the tax. Those who refused, were forcibly shaven of their beards.
The beard tax was abolished in 1772.
Can you imagine how much revenue you can make today off the beards in Brooklyn alone?
