Because the whole song just screams V, if he'd lived long enough to have a depressive episode over his existence. Walk with me here, yeah?

The song starts with the singer singing about how they don't feel like themself, and how their continual failures have them asking "How much more can 'soon' last?" This easily reflects V's temporary existence, how he's literally flaking apart as the story progresses.

The verse ends with the singer asking "How did I end up here?"

Then we get to the chorus (oh my god the CHORUS), which goes "Nothing's fitting together, I'm not getting better, I'm a mess in progress, without the time to change oh I'm screwed, concept without proof"

Like, like. IT'S V. Questioning his own being, feeling the chronic pain of himself flaking away, the concept of Vergil without the proof of his existence.

Verse two, the singer talks about backsliding, falling into old patterns, judgement getting washed away by emotion, and we get to the line above, "I don't know ME anymore".

How can V know himself, when comparing to his memories as Vergil? Should he think of himself as only the memories after the split between himself and Urizen? Can he afford himself the luxury???

Obviously in canon the answer becomes "No, he can't afford the time and the luxury, he becomes Vergil once more", but this is a timeline where V gets to feel his emotions fully before deciding one way or another.

Y'know, hence the depression. Lol.
