I picture the way how him and red relationship developed was partly looking at books and knowledge about Sparta the other part was investigating the order of the sword because something about it didn't feel right to Vergil. Luckily for them both red and vergil weren't the only ones suspicious about the order of the sword. A knight that went by the name John Eleison. (Credo's and kyrie's)The knight who lives by a code of honor and the things the order we're doing we're going against that Honor. John help red and vergil get into certain places and help them with a lot of other certain things. After a while vergil start to see John as one of the many few sapien he can respect in even go as far as call a friend, probably his first friend. John wasn't just knight before he moved to fortune John was was part of a military special ops division that hunting demons kind of like dark com except they wouldn't attack demons unless they knew for sure they were a threat if demons were in a threat the division wouldn't harm them but that's only after they made sure they weren't a threat. Safe to say the division and dark com not get along.
John is the last of this division after an accident where almost everyone in the division were killed in plane crash.
Back to present day John is helping them hide while patching Dante's and Vergil's or as John and red calls him V's wounds which were healing rather slowly because of they're inflicted upon by Mundus
John has nothing against lay when he found out she once was part of darkcom and say the fact she got out when she knew how bad it really was it just proved she is more of a conscience than anyone else in darkcom. John has also been keeping tabs on darkcom and believes that the very fact that they tried to go into demon world was a completely suicidal.
John once promised red but if anything ever happened to her he would always keep eye on Nero and make sure he was safe.
One of the reasons John is is putting back on the uniform he originally hung up when he settled down was and is against the order of the sword is because he's even though he can't prove it he has a feeling that they somehow wrapped his children or at least his son into until they're twisted cult.
John is the one who reveals to red and vergil that's the order have been grooming Nero to become the next dark Knight for mundus and also reveals that Nero has already activated his devil trigger but he can't control it.

I'm thinking if in the Netflix version Nero I've never even stepped into makai is more feared in notorious then Nelo Angelo a.k.a vergil his father. Not because he's that good of a hunter but because when he blacks out and his devil trigger activates he pretty much becomes a more brutal Batman who is fueled by rage (and secretly pain) and doesn't mind killing. That's one of the reasons why mundus so determined to have Nero of Angelo ribelle to be Nelo Angelo's successor. Nero doesn't even want revenge, he just wanted to protect the family that he knows of and home he still has.
