In DMC4, Nero is shown listening to music during Kyrie's performance, firstly: what a jerk! If you're at a bloody performance, pay attention, damn it! Secondly, this opens up a very interesting possibility because I like to imagine Fortuna as a very strict place regarding anything from outside – I mean, they were strict even with people from outside the island and religion, a very nationalistic mindset, "us against them", besides possibly, cough cough, fascists cough cough – this includes many things like technology, books, knowledge, art, and especially the point I want to make: music! Which means there was little variety in music, and a large part of it was about religion, which, as we can see, wasn't Nero's thing. This kid doesn't look like a punk for nothing in DMC4! So here's my headcanon: Nero was part of the Order, and his adoptive brother was the commander of the Knights of Fortuna. So listen to me carefully: what prevents Nero from having seen the contraband cargo entering Fortuna and... having taken it? Like, before it was burned or something like that?
So, the smugglers have already been caught and stuff, and they have to leave the cargo somewhere before destroying it, right? So I can picture a scene of a child/teenager Nero entering somewhere after running away to avoid being reprimanded, and he ends up in the very place where they put the contraband, and that's where he finds all sorts of things he's never seen before, but what catches his attention the most are the records, or rather their covers: 'Back From Samoa'? A band called Sex Pistols? And by Salvador, is that a naked baby swimming after money?! Yes, he was shocked and very, very curious. He listened to all these songs in secret and started going into the warehouse to replenish his music collection, and after a while, he started bringing more of that punk vibe to his clothes and changed his way of thinking quite a bit. This kid stopped caring about being reprimanded like he used to, and people couldn't really do much because, well, who's going to speak ill of the Commander's adopted brother? And besides that, he was fuck strong?? Certainly not me, especially with his predisposition to anger and rebellion. Did he face trials?? It's easier to count on one hand who didn't judge him, But at that moment Nero was too busy listening to 'Fun House' by the Stooges for the tenth time to care or think about that at that moment.
