Post-Parliament Reaction
I think that our time in Parliament has been some of my favorite times of this entire semester. Getting to see these politicians in the midst of the Brexit debates and in such a politically ripe time in the world, was incredibly eye-opening, and I really enjoyed it. Barry Gardiner was interesting in that his views are probably most aligned with my own so It was interesting to see his reasoning for the same/similar opinion as I held and realizing that the way he got to that endpoint was not the same as the way I had.
It was also kind of fun to watch each politician avoid the things they did want to talk about and pontificate about somewhat meaningless things in a way that made it seem like they were answering your question. I feel like the politicians in the States do that just as much but somehow it is a little more clumsily done most of the time, or maybe its because i was raised with those politicians i can see it more.
It was also interesting to go to dinner with one of my dad’s long time work friends, who is English, because over the course of discussing our visit with Mr. Gardiner she made me think of some things i hadn’t previously thought of. For instance she was looking to buy an apartment here in London while the referendum was going on and as soon as it was announced that the decision had been made to leave the EU, she backed out and stopped looking, deciding that it wasn’t going to be a good financial investment in the long run with all of the uncertainty around the UK’s economic future. I had realized that large companies were pulling out of London, but I hadn’t really thought about how it was impacting the financial decisions of individuals.
