In the blink of an eye, the ball was in the net – the end of the road for Germany at the 2026 World Cup. Disappointment and grief...but above all, it was self-loathing that tormented Neuer, so much so that he didn’t even notice the pain in his hands until his love – someone who meant so much to him – turned up in his hotel room, and two professional footballers could simply be together without having to be the hope of a nation.

They really are, aren’t they? Whether you want to view them romantically or platonically, they’ve been through so much together. Hell, they’ve probably known each other almost longer than they haven’t at this point, so they know each other better than just about anyone else could. And there’s such an intimacy in being truly known, isn’t there? In being seen at your weakest, your strongest, and everything in between. In being loved for all of it. That’s Neuller and Thomats at their core: being seen and loved for all that you are, unconditionally. I think even their actual romantic relationships would be hard-pressed to compete with that kind of bond. Can’t ask for more from rpf ships, methinks ❤️
