#negative stereotypes

Hey guys! I’m conducting some research for the completion of my degree covering stereotype threat in the media. More specifically, we are trying to see if inducing stereotype threat will affect someone’s cognitive abilities.

I need to find short clips from the media (can be movies, TV shows, commercials, etc,) that portray both positive and negative stereotypes. These stereotypes can be related to race/ethnicity or gender, and they have to be available to watch in one way or another, so preferably on YouTube. If not there, having the episode information would be helpful if it is from a TV show, or other general timestamp information for TV shows or movies.

Okay. I like Bridgerton, there's many things they do extremely well. And I liked Benedict in this as the second son searching for his place...

I also at first thought his interactions in the season were sexy, but something was making my uncomfortable despite it being the bi representation that as a bi woman I am always happy to see.

Now Bridgerton sells it's self as sexy so I suppose it's in keeping with the brand but...

All the interactions between Benedict and the male lover they introduced were sexual, the relationship was purely sexual, even the aspect of three in a bed situation which I'm sure was supposed to go along the lines of sexual freedom felt a bit wrong to me - again not something I mind ...

The issue is that it is insensitive to a sensitive Bi issue and that is how we are considered by many in society as over-sexed. We are treated as accessories to others relationships with offers of three in a bed situations with married couples from young ages and with no concern to the fact we might be seeking real long term attachment and not a quick fling. We are told women do not want to date us because we're always going to be wanting a man and men don't want to date us because it would hurt their pride if we dumped them for a women. It is assumed we have a larger dating pool and are lucky when we actually have a smaller dating pool due to these issues. a well held idea that we are overly sexual. We don't know what we're going to met with when we reveal our sexuality to partners but it can be violence, disgust, and fetishism. We are treated as tools for others desires and can be met with anger when we say no. No I don't want this, no this so called 'sexual freedom' is being forced upon me I'm being told It is what I must want but it is not (my experience, as a monogamous bi person). There is damage to it - being told your only good for flings and not relationships, that you're only a sexual fantasy and people will not look beyond that to see the person underneath.

So the three in a bed introduction to Benedict's sexuality - it felt wrong. It felt like it could be a gentle falling instead. It was played to tantalise which is in keeping with the brand but it unfortunately holds to these negative over sexualised bisexual stereotypes which can be harmful. They could have made it LOVE but they made it sex and I wish they'd done better.

Review national laws and policies to identify and eliminate discriminatory provisions against persons with disabilities and ensure their equal opportunities to participate politically, economically and socially without discrimination

Raise awareness about persons with disabilities through public campaigns to combat negative stereotypes against them, engaging persons with disabilities and organizations of persons with disabilities in such activities.

Develop mechanisms for reporting on discrimination that include the creation of a public service, where persons with disabilities can file or report incidences of discrimination.

Since I was re-reading the Harry Potter series, I wondered about something. Joanne Rowling wrote a pretty long post online about how size-obsessed people are, especially when it comes to women, and how their worth should not be determined by weight or body size. Totally agree. It starts out “Is fat really the worst thing a person can be? Not to me..” Maybe you know it.

However, an astounding number of primarily “negative” characters in her books are described as fat. The only two nice people I could find who are described as “stout” (not fat, because such a bad word, apparently) were Molly Weasley and Pomona Sprout, the Herbology professor.

“Bad” or mean characters who are fat and whose bodies or body parts are repeatedly described as ugly, repulsive, or disgusting (and with use of the word “fat”, occasionally): Dudley Dursley, Vernon Dursley, Marjorie Dursley (Aunt Marge), Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle, Peter Pettigrew, Dolores Umbridge (!, because extra evil, you know) and Horace Slughorn.

So bad fat people outnumber good fat people 4:1, and while they are behaving badly in some way it is pointed out that they do so while using their “fat fists”, their “stubby fingers”, “toad-like face”, all these supposedly off-putting descriptions thrown in so we know “bad is as unattractive looks”. All of them are shown to be stupid, violent, abusive, cowardly, sadistic and corrupt.

 I have heard it said that the exceptions are the Malfoys and early Voldemort, although technically, Draco and Lucius are not described as handsome, but just as pale with pointy faces.

That’s .. kind of neutral in my book,  while Cedric Diggory as a really, really good person is super-handsome and Sirius is handsome, too, and Fleur is both beautiful and good.

Also, Voldemort became more and more disfigured as he became more evil, so .. people who are disfigured are so because they made really bad choices, apparently.
