right now i'm thinking of the magic of supernatural and the fact that so little of it comes from the show itself but the people who enjoy it. destiel is an obvious example - its roots lay within the text, the actors, the staging of moments, etc - but to get anything worthwhile from it you have to steep yourself in fandom trenches. you Have to scroll on tumblr and read a 350 word character analysis that your mutual reblogged. you Have to look at the gifsets and screenshotted tumblr posts on pinterest and by god you HAVE to read at least one fanfic. the complexities of sam & dean's relationship is another example - like yeah. they Did do the michael/lucifer good brother/bad brother thing. they did kind of hint at john's neglect and yes. the show is ABOUT them. so there are good moments at times. but over the course of years people took the bare minimum that was the canon explanation for their codependency and wrote it into a despairing tale of sibling love and hate so potent that i really believe it transcends its own text.
im just thinking The Show supernatural sucks and did way too much and far too little. but the Idealized Version of supernatural is dramatic and interesting and subdued in a way that it needs to be while actually conveying the messages it wanted to all along. and that's pretty great i guess
