"Physicists at the University of Ottawa and the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light produced polarization-entangled photon pairs using nothing but outdoor sunlight as the pump source — and confirmed genuine quantum behavior by clearing Bell's inequality test by 2.49 standard deviations, in a study published in Optica on August 6. The result overturns a foundational assumption of quantum optics: that the orderly, synchronized light of a laser is a prerequisite for generating quantum entanglement.

It is not. Sunlight — spatially diffuse, spectrally broad, and temporally chaotic — turns out to be sufficient, provided the right degree of freedom is targeted.

The dominant technique for producing entangled photon pairs is spontaneous parametric down-conversion, or SPDC: a pump photon enters a nonlinear crystal and spontaneously splits into two lower-energy daughter photons that can emerge in an entangled state. Under the right conditions, measuring one daughter photon instantly constrains what you will find when you measure the other, regardless of how far apart they are. That is the non-local correlation quantum mechanics predicts — and that a Bell test confirms cannot be explained by any classical model."

"The key insight — developed theoretically by the Boyd group at Ottawa and demonstrated experimentally with LED pumps in 2023 — is that this degree-of-freedom orthogonality principle holds firm. Spatial and temporal incoherence cannot degrade entanglement in polarization if the pump is highly polarized and the target entanglement is in polarization. The two quantities simply do not talk to each other. Once that distinction was established, the question became mechanical: could sunlight be concentrated and polarized well enough to pump SPDC at a useful rate?

The answer, demonstrated across three outdoor experimental days on the campus of the Max Planck Institute in Erlangen, Germany, is yes."
