Aflatoxins from a variety of edible substances such as cereals, oil seeds, spices, vegetables, dried fruits, pulses, areca nuts, coco and fast foods have been recorded in India. The aflatoxins were the subject of intensive research when outbreaks of disease called "Turkey X' disease" occurred in Poultry in the United Kingdom during 1960. The aflatoxin problem has been an economic burden for the food crops, livestock and poultry industry since the start of mycotoxin research. Aflatoxins are acutely toxic in rats and other laboratory animals, being carcinogenic, mutagenic and teratogenic, but there has always been concern about food contamination with aflatoxins and the danger to both human and animal health. Aflatoxin B1, B2, G1, G2 and M1 are of key concern. Aflatoxin M1 is the most commonly occurring aflatoxin hydroxylated metabolite of B1. Additionally, aflatoxin B1 is one of the most active known hepato-carcinogens, so dietary aflatoxin levels are an important factor for human health. Therefore, in order to reduce the deleterious effects of these mycotoxins, it is necessary to put in place effective cheap and secure control steps. The goal of this review study was to investigate the biological adverse effects of these aflatoxins and their health hazards.
