A young woman inherits a pocket watch from her scientist grandfather, a man she never knew. The watch does not tell time: it rewinds it, but only for the mind of the one who carries it. Her body remains in the present, asleep or in a trance, while her consciousness is projected backward into a male body within her own paternal lineage. Each journey allows her to relive bygone eras through one of her ancestors. The watch can take her up to a hundred years into the past. However, the farther she travels, the more her memories of her former life begin to blur. As long as she wears the watch on her wrist in the present, she can remain in the past for thirty minutes at a time before being pulled back. ​While she is inhabiting her great-grandfather in the 1940s, a burglar breaks into her home. Finding her body motionless, he steals the watch from her wrist. With the link severed, she cannot return. She is trapped in that man's body forever.
