Hawke stumbled a little as she left the Hanged Man, the rogue tripping over her own feet, courtesy of one too many mugs of ale. She went to catch herself on one of the barrels outside out of habit, but a hand slid around her waist to keep her upright instead.
âIâve got you, love,â Anders smiled at her, pulling her close to his side, his arm still around her. She leaned gladly against him, her heart swelling with affection at the simple gesture. It was the little things like this that she had enjoyed since they had finally gotten together a month ago, and it seemed he did too. He was often the one that carried out the gestures; reaching for her hand whilst walking in the market place, offering his lap as a resting place for her head after a long day, giving her a kiss goodnight.
It took her a while to figure out just why he did it, but then all at once it was so obvious. It was because it was normal. Normal wasnât something he had ever truly experienced, especially when it came to romance. He had spoken a few times of his past escapades with other mages in the Circle, only truly feeling anything for Karl, but even then, he could never have the same moments he could experience with her. There was no chance for hand holding in the tower, or seeking the simple comfort of someone close to you after a long day.
Their relationship represented the freedom he fought so desperately for. The freedom for a mage to love a non mage, to have a home together, a life, a family someday, was the reason he spent hours writing his manifesto, poured every ounce of his energy into the mage underground. So that other mages could have a normal life, something that he had a chance at.
With his arm still around her, they walked through the Lowtown market, now closed due to the late hour. She sang one of Isabelaâs bawdy drinking songs under her breath and he smiled at her. He so loved this little moments with Hawke, his Hawke, the Hawke that only he saw.
She let out a whine of protest when a drop of rain landed on her head, but then one hit him, and another, and another, and soon, the heavens opened and they found themselves in the middle of a downpour. A screech left her lips and she took off running, grabbing hold of his hand, pulling him along with her. They sprinted through the rain together, hand in hand, both soaked to the skin within minutes. They slipped their way up the steps to Hightown, Anders then quickly yanking Hawke into one of the shop doorways to get some shelter from the rain.
They looked at each other, both with rain running down their faces, hair dripping and stuck to their skin, and burst out laughing. Neither bothered to control their laughter, and they leaned on each other as they laughed. Still giggling a little, Hawke smiled at Anders. He looked like a drowned cat, his hair bedraggled, his feathery pauldrons a mess, but to hear him laugh like that was a rarity and she had to revel in it.
His eyes met hers and he was quick to kiss her then, pressing her against the wall, their lips wet with rainwater, bellies aching from the laughter. He could taste the ale on her lips, feel the pounding of her heart as their chests pressed together. Maker he loved being able to get this close to her.
âHave I ever told you that I love the rain?â he smiled.
She hummed through kiss swollen lips, âWish you mentioned it before.â
Just as quickly as the rain had started, it was over again. The lovers poked their heads out of the doorway, watching the clouds start to move on. They stepped back out into the market, heading home, and they both inhaled deeply. There was no better smell than drying rain on concrete.
âRain always makes me think of the first time I escaped the Tower,â he told her as they walked, âIt had been so long since Iâd felt rain upon my skin, that I stood in the middle of a storm, letting myself get soaked and battered around by the rain. It was amazing,â he kissed her wet head, âRain is freedom, love.â
