Film 115, continuing my Lynn Bari watch-a-thon: ORCHESTRA WIVES, 1942. Summary: men are womanizers, which is forgivable; women are gossips, which is not. This film reunites Ms. Bari with Glen Miller and his orchestra, trying to recapture the magic of 41's Sun Valley Serenade; however, although this film is unquestionably a very good one, it falls well short of its predecessor. Added to the mix, this time, is the always excellent Cesar Romero, as one of a trio of toe-curlingly despicable womanizing musicians: seriously, if this film were made today, these men would be the irredeemable villains of the piece; in 1942 they were the incorrigible, but loveable, protagonists. If you can stomach the chauvinism, then you'll find Orchestra Wives to be a thoroughly satisfying romantic drama, elevated far above the herd by the sheer perfection of Ms. Bari's performance, and by what is probably the best, most gutsy, swing I've ever heard. Quality 8/10 Entertainment 8/10.
