Do you think that parts and creatures of moonshadow forest are a mystery even to the elves that live there? Like a “yeah there are giant centipedes, venomous rodents, and also other things” “what kind of other things” “no one’s seen them and lived but the damage to the bodies showed it was some other thing” kind of situation
Most likely. One of the big things about Moonshadow Forest is that it's a place of power for moon magic - which is about playing with perception and reality. It's hard to be sure what's real and what isn't in the darker parts of the forest, even for a Moonshadow elf who's tied to the same magic (as we saw with Rayla around the Moon Nexus that unless they're controlling the illusion it works on them too). That's why I headcanon they have established paths through the forest that they keep carefully lit and clear, with guides and guards set to travel them often to keep them that way, and those are the main thoroughfares from village to village. One doesn't leave those paths or the boundaries of the villages alone unless they're prepared to let the forest have its due.
I don't know if I've posted about this before but I think that we'll be seeing a lot more of the Moonshadow forest and elves in the final two seasons of the show.
We have Rayla's family being freed, the entire family being reunited, Rayla, Lain and Tiadrin being unghosted, a Runaan story and Kimdael lurking around there.
I also think that there's a very real possibility that at least some of our favourite characters will end up staying and living in the Silvergrove, especially after Aaravos returns. It's hidden by a powerful illusion spell to conceal it from uninvited outsiders so it could be the perfect place for them to hide out and formulate a plan to defeat Aaravos. Plus there also looks like there's a lot of space for tents etc for them to stay in.

Have moonshadow elves always lived in that forest? How many settlements are in the forest?
Are you asking me which came first, the Moonshadow Forest or the Moonshadow elves? When my ancestors came to this forest, its trees already kissed the sky and offered those below the welcoming shelter of their deepest shadows. But that wasn’t so long ago, and the forest already had its secret inhabitants. They are how we knew to settle there.
I love my forest, and I take care of it along with the elves who live there with me. We shepherd its creatures and tend its trees and shrubs, because their lives are as important to us as our own. The health of a forest is an interconnected web. When one parts falls ill or gets injured, its damage can spread if it is neglected. Working together for the good of all--all--is the easiest way to keep yourself safe and healthy too.
Every Moonshadow village tends to the forest around it. There we find our food, our shelter, our friends, and our joy. We may not know where every village is, but we know where they are not, because the forest struggles there. As long as the forest thrives, does it matter how many elves share in its bounty and balance?
It’s not the Moonshadow Forest if there are no Moonshadow elves living in it. But as long as there is yet one elf with the Moon arcanum to shelter in and tend to this great wood, then it is and shall ever remain the Moonshadow Forest.
murky wood = shadowy forest?
I’m always on the lookout for any tidbits that might either support or dash my hopes for my Prince Runaan headcanon (pt 1, pt 2). The new map in Book One: Moon happened to catch my eye because I spent so much time staring at maps of Mirkwood for my old Thranduil fanfics.
On the left: Mirkwood, in Middle Earth. The turquoise circle at the top right is where the elves currently live, in the Elvenking’s Halls, with Thranduil as their king. The red circle in the bottom right is Dol Guldur, née Amon Lanc, King Oropher’s first castle in the forest before the evil of the shadow gradually pushed the elves northward.
And on the right: similar positions for the Silvergrove and the Ruins of Elarion in Xadia.
I haven’t read the book yet, obviously, since it doesn’t come out until next week, but I’ll be super curious to learn if there are any tiny hints about Elarion’s relationship to the history of the Moonshadow Forest.
But for now, I’m super stoked to see that the forest that the Moonshadows might’ve immigrated eastward to when the lava border was drawn really looks like the forest that Oropher and Thranduil immigrated to after their homeland was lost to them as well. TDP cartographers giving me life today!

The Moonshadow Forest has plenty of room for all sorts of magical beings, though. Just saying.
