Do the older generations in Maharashtra know how to read Modi/still use the script? It sounds like it was quite popular and standard for writing Marathi until ≈1950 but most of my Marathi friends haven’t even heard of it.
The shift from Modi to Balbodh Devanagari happened in the early 20th century, and the transformation was more or less completed by mid-century. As such, I wouldn't say it was 'popular and standard' until the 1950s so much as the 1920s, after which is started waning.
Unfortunately, I don't know anyone still living who has experienced life from before the 1950s, so I can't poll them directly on whether or not they could write in Modi. However my parents, born in the 50s, never learned the script in school and have exclusively used Devanagari all their lives.
Also, this might be an aside, but you have to factor in that literacy levels were much, much lower in that era compared to later decades and the present day. The number of people who learnt to write Modi might very well be a drop in the bucket compared to the number of people who learned writing Marathi in Devanagari script. Makes sense that Modi is forgotten not only in how to write it, but what it was in the first place.

Being a leading translation services provider in India, we have been delivering the finest range of services in dozens of languages. However, Modi script translation is special for several reasons and one of them is that it is close to our heart. Operating from Marathi speaking land, we understand the importance of Modi script for the study of Maratha Empire that had shook the whole Indian subcontinent for nearly two hundred years. There is only one source to know the history of Maratha Empire of 17th and 18th century and that is Modi script.
