Johan Gerard Keulemans, a Dutch illustrator, died Mar. 29, 1912, at age 69.

St. George Mivart – Scientist of the Day

St. George Mivart (yes, St. George was his first name), an English naturalist, was born Nov. 30, 1827. Mivart was an outspoken critic of Darwin’s evolution by natural selection, and he was also critical, as a Catholic, of certain doctrines of the Catholic Church.

"The Smallest Anteater" (The Silky Anteater, Cyclopes didactylus dorsus)

This anteater is slow-moving and largely arboreal, much like their sloth cousins. However, they also have a partially prehensile tail, and eat, well, ants. Sometimes they also eat other insects that pass by them, but they don't produce chitinase, so they can't fully digest those bugs.

This illustration makes me feel like I could train a platypus to beg for treats...they'd probably stab me with their venomous leg-spikes. Well, the males, at least.
