The May "Blue Micromoon" rising over Apache Junction
Blue Moon May 31, 2026 — What You’ll REALLY See Through a Telescope
Most people hear “Blue Moon” and think the Moon will somehow turn blue.
It won’t.
But what will happen on May 31, 2026 is actually far more interesting for skywatchers.
This full Moon is both: ✨ A Blue Moon (the second full Moon in a calendar month) ✨ A Micromoon (the Moon is near its farthest point from Earth)
And through a telescope? The view is incredible.
You’ll be able to see:
🔭 Tycho’s enormous white ray system spreading across the lunar surface 🌑 The dark maria (“seas”) including Mare Tranquillitatis — where Apollo 11 landed 🕳️ Giant craters like Copernicus and Aristarchus glowing in sharp contrast 📸 Stunning full-disk Moon views that are perfect for smartphone photography
One thing most guides never mention:
⚠️ The full Moon through a telescope is EXTREMELY bright. Without a Moon filter, it can feel like staring into a floodlight.
The guide below explains: • What magnification works best • What binoculars vs telescopes will show • The best time to observe after moonrise • How to photograph the Moon with your phone • Which lunar features to hunt down on May 31
If you’re planning to step outside for this event, this guide will help you see far more than just “a bright Moon.”

🍓 The Strawberry Moon of 2026 is Here ! 🌙
Get ready for one of the most beautiful full moons of the year. On June 29, 2026, the Strawberry Moon will rise and brighten the night sky with its stunning glow.
Although its name may suggest a pink-colored Moon, the Strawberry Moon is not actually pink. The name comes from Native American Algonquin traditions, which linked this full Moon to the short season when wild strawberries were ready to be harvested.
This year’s event is even more special because it will be a micromoon. That means the Moon will be near its farthest distance from Earth, making it appear slightly smaller than a typical full Moon.
The June 2026 full Moon will also be the lowest full Moon of the year, staying unusually close to the horizon as it travels across the sky. As it rises after sunset, it may appear golden, orange, amber, or even slightly pink due to the way Earth’s atmosphere filters and scatters light.

Really enjoyed this Blue Micromoon conjunct Antares✨
✧ micromoon magic ✧
micromoons occur when the [full] moon is at its farthest point from earth (apogee), making it appear smaller than usual. because of its distance from the earth, the gravitational influence of a micromoon is less than usual, leading to a smaller variation of high and low oceanic tides.
in reference to magic:
because of its size, the micromoon can correspond to magical workings that involve narrowing in on a subject, which could be introspection, reflection, dedication, focus, etc.
its distance from earth, however, insinuates that it could have less influence on our emotions, moods, and other traits that are governed by the moon (ymmv) - for me, it presents the idea that if my mind isn't clouded with emotion that i'm able to more freely rely on logic to make decisions and take action.
micromoon correspondences:
reflection
introspection
productivity
focus
time management
oh, and if you're into pop culture magic - you can associate micromoons with sailor chibi moon!

If you happen to look up at the sky just after dusk on Sunday, you’ll see something that only happens once in a blue moon — literally. That’s because the month’s second full moon, which is known as a blue moon, will be visible then. If you recall, May’s full flower moon occurred on May 1 this year, allowing us this month’s rare BOGO full moon opportunity. We won’t see another calendrical blue moon until December 2028!
Some Tips: While Sunday is the date of the full moon, it will also appear full to the human eye on Saturday night. This moon will be extra special because it's also what astronomers call a "micromoon," which occurs when the moon reaches its farthest point from Earth in its monthly orbit, about 252,000 miles away. Though it will technically appear about 6% smaller than usual, you're unlikely to notice the difference with the naked eye. In fact, since this full moon will hang low in the southern sky, it might actually appear larger than normal due to an optical illusion that makes low-hanging moons look enormous!
