Have you asked yourself how often does Phryne go to the police station, compared to Jack’s visits to her house? Because I have. To answer this question I have counted the number of scenes and categorized them as:

scenes with jack in Phryne’s home, in any location of the house

scenes with Phryne in the police’s station, in the common areas such as the entrance or investigation room

scenes with Phryne in Jack’s office

scenes with Phryne sitting in Jack’s table

It’s clear from the graph that Phryne visits the police station much more than he visits her home, which makes perfect sense as it is where they normally interview witnesses and discuss the case.

By Season

When analyzing by season, we can see an increase in visiting from both parties, especially the number of scenes with Phryne sitting on Jack’s table.

By Episode

Viewing by episode, it’s very clear which episodes were outside of Melbourne by the lower appearances in the police station or Phryne’s house, like Dead Man’s Chest (S2E3) and Murder Under the Mistletoe (S2E13). Although Jack visits far less than Phryne visits him at the station, almost every episode has at least a final scene with him at her house, with a few exceptions (especially in season 1).

Here are some graphs that I made about the number of times Jack and Phryne call each other, and how. Notes about how it was collected below!

On the left, we have the total number of times Jack calls Phryne: 

“(Miss) Phryne Fisher” (3 times)

“Miss Fisher” (156 times)

“Phryne” (14 times)

On the right, we have the total number of times Phryne calls Jack: 

“Detective Inspector Jack Robinson” (13 times)

“Inspector (Jack) (Robinson)“ (84 times)

“Jack” (186 times)

In the graph, we can see quite clearly who calls each other more and what are they preferred words when referencing each other.

When analyzing the data by season, we can see how Phryne starts to use “Jack” more and more through the seasons and uses less of formal terms, especially in season 3. Jack, on the other hand, remains mostly constant, and even calls her “Phryne” less in season 2 and 3 (Although I think this will change when I add the movie to this graph haha).

Notes on the graph by season: This graph actually shows the average number of times they call each other per episode, as it would be difficult to compare it fairly otherwise since season 3 has fewer episodes.

Here we can see the data by every episode in the series. It’s interesting to note how much it varies through episodes, and I don’t think it’s directly correlated to the amount of screen time they share in each (I collected this data as well, of course, but I am still thinking of how to show it properly). It also doesn’t seem to be much correlation between the number of times each calls another in the same episode, especially in later seasons. Now let’s separate this graph by season so we can see it a little better!

Season 1

Episode 1 and 2 are one of the few episodes Phryne doesn’t say “Jack”, apart from the final moment on episode 2 where he asks her to call him so. She immediately starts using it quite often, but Jack holds on to saying “Phryne” only in very specific moments. Although most episodes have Phryne calling him more, S1E7 (Murder in Montparnasse) and S1E10 (Death by Miss Adventure) have the opposite pattern, even having Jack call her “Phryne” twice.

Season 2

As consequence of what happens in S2E7 (Blood at the Wheel), we can see how in the next episode Phryne shifts back and starts calling him “inspector” again. S2E12 (Unnatural Habits) is the episode Phryne calls him “Jack” the most (15 times) and the episode Jack calls her “Miss Fisher” the most (11 times), probably since they are indeed keeping very close company these days ;)

Season 3

Season 3 shows a more constant number of “calls” per episode, although there are still some (I’m looking at you, Death & Hysteria) where Phryne and Jack hardly call each other.

Notes: I counted every time one mentioned the other, be it talking to them or referring them to someone else. Most formal entries, such as when Phryne says “Detective Inspector ... “ or Jack says “Miss Phryne Fisher” occur when they are referring to each other to other people.

After visualizing Jack’s ties by season, by number of episodes and by wardrobe mixups, we finally arrive at the (probably) final entry of this tie-focused series of posts. Today, let’s check a tie-wise overview of each episode of the series.

Each graph shows the ties worn in each episode, ordered by screen appearance, from bottom to top. There is a very strong correlation between the number of different outfits Jack wears with the number of days of each investigation, so these graphs can also show us the span of time of each episode.

Season 1

Notice how in The Green Mill Murder (S1E3) and Death at Victoria Dock (S1E4) Jack wears the exact same ties in the same order. I don’t know about you, but I don’t believe in coincidences. 𝓹𝓵𝓪𝔂 𝔁-𝓯𝓲𝓵𝓮𝓼 𝓽𝓱𝓮𝓶𝓮

The “Beige Tie” appears quite frequently in the final scenes of the show, while the “Striped Tie” seems to be more commonly used in the middle of the episode. It’s also interesting to note that in the last episode of the season Jack uses the same tie twice, although in different suits. This only ever happens again in continuity errors (which I chose not to show in these graphs as it would disrupt the visualization, but if you are interested you can check them here ).

Season 2

We can clearly see how in season 2 Jack seems to start the investigation in darker blue ties and end the episode (usually in Phryne’s parlour) in his “Maroon Tie” or “Beige Tie”. One exception is the golden tie he wears in Dead Air (S2E11), when he is undercover. He also wears a special tie during his time on the 𝔪𝔲𝔯𝔡𝔢𝔯𝔬𝔲𝔰 ℭ𝔥𝔯𝔦𝔰𝔱𝔪𝔞𝔰 𝔠𝔞𝔯𝔬𝔩 𝔢𝔭𝔦𝔰𝔬𝔡𝔢 (S2E13) and a very random tie on Blood of Juana the Mad (S2E8) that never appeared again.

Season 3

In season 3 we have a strong prevalence of blue and a great variety in styles, with many new ties being introduced. It’s interesting to note that, after the first episode where the “Rather Nice Tie” is introduced and Phryne mentions how much she likes it, Jack is only seen using it in the final scenes of the show, usually private moments with her.

Have you ever wondered how many times Jack has worn each tie? Which tie is worn the most? In what order? Necktie continuity errors? If the answer to those questions is NO, AND WHY WOULD YOU?, that’s expected. But if you do find it at least slightly interesting, I will be showing some of this data in this and future posts.

And the winner of the most worn tie contest is.......!

Yes, the “Diamond Striped Tie”, or whatever you like to call it, being worn 20 times in total! Tied in second place we have the “Diamond Tie” and “Beige Tie” with 16 and the “Feathers Tie” (my personal favorite) with 15 in third place. (Yes, I named all the ties, and some of them have awful arbitrary names, but I had to, so don’t judge me) 

Let’s check the complete results:

Look at that beautiful curve. Naturally, we can see common ties to all seasons on the left of the graph and ties that are worn in only one episode of the show on the right. There are a few exceptions, such as the “Beige Tie” that, although it does not appear in season 3, still managed to reach second place. Also the “Rhombus Filled Tie”, even though is worn in all seasons, has a much lower appearance than expected.

Season 1

The “Beige Tie” wins as the most worn tie in season 1, closely followed by the “Diamond Striped Tie”. Apart from the bow tie shown in Ruddy Gore, all other neckties in season 1 are common appearances throughout the series.

Season 2

Our champion tie is also the most worn when considering only season 2, closely followed by four of the commonly used ties. The “Striped Tie”, although more popular in other seasons, does not appear that often in season 2. This season shows a greater variety in terms of colors, especially regarding ties exclusive to one episode.

Season 3

In season 3 we can see that the usage of each necktie is much better distributed than in previous seasons and there is a much stronger use of blue ties as well. And, of course, Phryne’s favorite tie is the one that he wears the most during the season (:

Here are some graphs that I made about the amount of screen time each character has in Miss Fisher. Notes about how it was calculated are down below for those who are interested!

Obviously Phryne has the most screen time of all characters (75% of scenes), followed by Jack, appearing in 47% of scenes.

In this graph we can see the screen time per season. Dot and Hugh have very similar screen times but you can see how that changes in season 3 as Hugh does not appear in a number of episodes and Dot appears more as she participates in the investigations more actively than in previous seasons. Jack gains a lot of screen time after season 1 and maintains it in season 2 and 3.

In this graph we can see Phryne’s (pink, on the left) and Jack’s (blue, on the right) percentage of appearances during each episode of the series. We can see how his presence grew as the show progressed and even surpassed Phryne’s in a few episodes (S2E01 Murder Most Scandalous and S2E08 The Blood of Juana the Mad).

Here we can see Dot’s (yellow, on the left) and Hugh’s (light blue, on the right) percentage of screen time. While many episodes show them very equally, some episodes stand out (S1E06 Ruddy Gore shows Dot a lot more, probably because of her crush for that actor, while S2E08 The Blood of Juana the Mad shows Hugh a lot more, probably since Phryne and Jack were not in good terms, Jack needed someone to be on the scene with him haha). We can also see the two episodes in season 3 that Hugh did not participate quite clearly as well.

I hope you find this as interesting as I do! I am working on an online interactive version of these graphs and many others so it will be much easier to play around with the data!

Jack Robinson’s Rather Nice Ties 

Simplified version of all 16 of Jack’ neckties I made, showing each texture. In this Venn diagram we can see in which season each tie appeared, in order. 

Two neckties are exclusive to season 1 and 2 while there are 5 ties that are shared through all seasons. 

All ties that only appear in season 1 or only appear in season 2 are exclusive to a single episode. 

Even though season 3 has the lowest number of episodes, it has the highest number of exclusive ties while also showing most of the recurring ones. 

In season 3, only the brown tie is shown in only one episode of the show, while the remaining new ties appear in at least two episodes.
