Recognize the Gulf States used to trust us: the might not have liked our policies, but they knew there was a degree of consistency to them. Their move towards a hedging strategy is not taken lightly, given the expense in capital and lives. But Trump's erratic policies have created incredible distrust which will not go away, even if Trump is removed from office, and groups like the Heritage Foundation are prosecuted for their actions. Even if everyone on the Epstein list is prosecuted, the damage is done, because someone had to elect Trump to office, and that has damaged our relationships throughout the world at least for the foreseeable future, if not permanently.

I am trying not to resent all of you each day, but the hate can be unbearable and overwhelming. Try not to take it personally when I flame spray the sky and drop all the stars like glowworms in a cave.

Why else would you have done that instead of given him a piece of paper with a special trinket or something? That would have been a more symbolic gesture of civilized honor, grace, and dignity.

You made that twice as big as the Statue of Liberty as if the expression of your "statesman" is greater than the expression of the Statue of Liberty. Mark Hertling, The Bulwark: “As America Is Losing Friends, China Is Courting Them”

Last week, Mark Hertling put out a really well-done and very readable account of the way China uses BRICS and its Iron Road project to gain global influence. As an American I’m mostly (and somewhat selfishly) interested in the way we’re sacrificing American soft power, all the advantages that come from having so much of foreign relations, financial systems, technological innovation and all the rest centered around America’s interests. There’s this idea that being the world’s policeman puts other country’s interests before America’s, which I don’t accept, and Gen. Hertling mentions in passing some big parts of what America stands to lose with Trump’s irresponsibly throwing out America’s reputation as a stable partner and leader.

Personally, while of course as an American I don’t want to give up all that unearned benefit, I recognize there’s a lot of people in those BRICS countries who probably deserve more influence and a bigger share of the global economy than they’ve historically gotten. If it was only a question of reallocating influence, I’d be in no position to cry foul. The bigger problem is who leads them and their lack of respect for both individual rights and whole ethnic groups around it. For all its faults, we really are going to miss liberalism when it’s gone, and I hope the world finds a way to replace it with something better than this.

That’s not his biggest point, of course. China particularly is building influence on a rather different basis than America used in the last century: economic investment, and the ability to partner with them in some areas without having to totally align with them. It’s well worth reading if you’re trying to understand what China’s up to at a high level.
