I mean also thinking about it I just think we all deserve more adaptations where Escalus is played as increasingly furious and barely leashed.
Like the rocking motion that extra metrical beat gives to:
‘I have an interest in your heart’s proceedings
My blood for your rude brawls doth lie a-bleeding’
Played as more broken and angry and the rhyme hitting those hissing screeching ‘ee’ sounds rather than the kind of calm control many give him and then the return to pentameter in the next two lines:
‘But I’ll amerce you with so strong a fine
That you shall all repent that loss of mine’
Where the actor absolutely hammers the consonants and the metrical regularity as a kind of leashing of this rocking rage. BUT it can only be temporary because then he returns to the extra foot with ‘I shall be deaf to pleading and excuses’ and don’t tell me that’s coincidence because he could have used ‘excuse’ GAH I love it so much.
And then by the end, just a bit broken. Like his metrical security is not so much a reflection of certainty as a kind of rote proclamation, a return of the Prince to power as he has not been within the play, but the cost is so damn high.
I just think it would be fun to have a really visibly disturbed Escalus.
