You stepped out onto the deck that overlooked the ocean and sighed contently. Scanning the beautiful blue waters as the sky began to illuminate with shades of orange and pink, you wrapped your sweater around yourself and stepped down off the deck. You wiggled your toes in the sand for a moment, looking down at them before looking back at the ocean and heading towards it.
As you walked, water lapping at your ankles, you sang softly to yourself. You had heard it somewhere as a child and it had stuck in your head since.
That first time you saw him, it was off in the corner of your eye. You thought it was just someone out for their early morning swim, but when you stopped singing to look, no one was there. You looked around the stretch of beach, and out over the vast expanse of the water, but saw no one else. Confused, you continued on your walk, and your voice started up again.
Peeking up over the water again, he watched as she moved along the beach and sang.
He was positive she had no idea what she was singing, where it was from or what it meant. It was a song of his people, an ocean song, and no human had ever heard it as far as anyone knew. None that lived, anyways.
No human but her.
The second time you saw him, you were sitting on a rock that sat about knee deep in the water. Your long skirt was wet just along the hem, but it didn’t bother you. The sun was just beginning to rise over the water. This was your favorite time of the day. It was cool enough to be out barefoot with a light sweater, and people weren’t usually down by the water yet. There were the few who came out with their significant others to watch the sun rise with a picnic breakfast, or with shoes in hand after a night of drinking, but even then, the beach was vast, so you rarely saw people.
It gave you a chance to sing.
Your eyes were closed, your voice, though not loud, carried out over the water. Feeling eyes on you, you opened yours, and out on the water, you saw him. As soon as your voice stopped, he ducked back under. Furrowing your brow, you watched where he had been, the bubbles slowly disappearing, and began to scan the water for him to resurface. Surely he had to at some point. But he didn’t. Curious, you stood up, taking another look around. Nothing. “Hmm..” Sitting back down, you watched the sky again. Watched the stars slowly fade away as the light of day took over.
As you watched them, you started to quietly sing to yourself.
Peeking up over a rock, he watched as you stood, and looked around. Ducking for a moment, when he looked over again, you were sitting and looking up. He too, turned his attention to the sky and watched the stars slowly fade.
His eyes slowly shifted back to the human singing the song she shouldn’t know. Tilting his head to the side, he watch how the soft light illuminated her features. He got so lost in thought as he watched her, he didn’t noticed anything else until a hand touched his shoulder.
“You shouldn't be up by the surface, Sam. You know the laws.” His brother scolded. “What are you looking at, anyways?” As his brother began to look over the rock, Sam splashed him in the face. “Hey!”
“Race you home.” He smiled, knowing his older brother couldn’t resist a competition.
“You’re on.”
As his brother dove down, Sam took one last look behind him before joining.
You saw the man in the water a few more times before you decided to try and figure out who, or what, he was. You asked around, and while some people thought you were crazy, a few old fisherman started to fill you in on local legends. Old stuff, long before your time.
A child cursed and thrown into the water by his mother. Angry and seeking revenge by taking fisherman and anyone caught in his waters, dragging them down to a watery grave. Some claimed he used Sirens, or mermaids, singing their song to lure men and women right to him. “Mermaids?”
“Ey.”
“Has anyone seen one?”
“Ey.” You were pointed towards an older, dark skinned man in a back booth, drinking and muttering to himself. “Took ‘is best friend. ‘E swears it was the sirens. Led ‘em into a storm, pulled ‘im right off the deck.”
You spoke to the man, Rufus, about that night. About his friend Bobby Singer and what happened to him. And how Rufus spent the years since trying to hunt down the monsters that took his friend.
You went home with a lot on your mind. Could that be what this mystery man was? Did you even really believe the stories and legends were true? You had to get a better look at him.
Sam was swimming back towards home as the sun began to rise, when he heard the song again. Stopping, he looked towards the surface of the water. Was it her again? He glanced back to his brother swimming ahead of him and wondered how no one else seemed to hear it. Turning his eyes back towards the surface, he swam up.
When he came up, his eyes met yours. You had been waiting for him, expecting him. His eyes went wide, and he dove back down.
“Wait!” you called out, but he didn't stop. “Wait, please!” You gasped as a tail came up over the water, brilliant green and brown scales flashing with what little light the sky offered before it disappeared below the water with the rest of him. “Mermaids are real…” you muttered to yourself, staring out over the water in shock.
You couldn’t sleep, your mind was reeling. The stories were real, or at least based on something real. You needed air, needed space. Getting up, you grabbed a sweater and headed outside, not bothering with anything else.
As you stepped out, you heard it. Singing. Someone was singing your song. Your feet moved towards the sound before you even realized you were doing it. You could see someone, sitting on a rock. A man. A large man, long hair from what you could see. You could hear a spash of water, almost like a hint of music behind the words. A tail. It was him!
Afraid to scare him off, you moved as quietly as you could, bare feet in the sand. When you were closer, you let your voice join his.
He didn’t seem to mind at first, until he realized it was coming from behind him, and not out over the water. He stopped abruptly and turned. You gave him a smile. “Hi.”
He watched you, obviously weary of you. “Hi..”
Your smile widened. “You know my song?”
He shook his head. “You know ours.”
“Yours?”
He nodded. “A song of the ocean. My mother sang it to my brother. He sang it to me. How do you know a song of the ocean? No human alive knows it.”
You shrugged. “I heard it once, as a child. Couldn’t shake it. Couldn’t get it out of my head.” His brow furrowed at that. “What does it mean? I don’t even know what it means. People here call it the sirens song. Saying they hear it right before people get dragged down.”
He shook his head. “No. Though some have heard it as they died. We sometimes sing it to calm them in their final moments.”
“Oh…” You looked down at the sand. “I suppose I should stop singing it..”
“No.” You looked up at him. “I love hearing you sing it. You’re voice is perfect for it.” He smiled. “It’s a song of longing. I don’t know where it comes from, but it’s been sung as long as anyone can remember. Sad, really, but calming. So it gets passed on, mother to child.” He watched you as you thought that over, the moon light barely lighting up your features. “Sing it again?” He asked softly. “Sing it with me?”
You smiled and nodded, your voice flowing smoothly over the beach, and the ocean before his joined yours.
You saw him again and again. Nights when you couldn’t sleep, and mornings before anyone else was awake, you were there, on the beach singing with him. His voice the perfect partner to yours. The beautiful song sounding all the more beautiful when you sang together.
And then he wasn’t.
Days.
Weeks.
When you looked out your window and saw him again, you ran. With everything in you, you ran to him. You ignored the cold water as you rushed into it, rushed to him, throwing yourself in his arms. “I missed you.”
“I’m sorry.. I-” He held on tighter. “I came to say goodbye.”
“What!?” You pulled away, searching his face for a reason why, as if the answer was written there.
“They found out.”
“Who? Found out what?”
He sighed. “My brother, first.” He swallowed. “Then others. They told the king. It’s forbidden to be on the surface. Forbidden to teach others our songs. I was seen singing with you… I’m sorry. I’m going to get in more trouble just for coming to say goodbye, but I couldn’t just leave you wondering..”
“Sam-” Tears ran down your cheeks, and he brushed one away as the water, moving in and out, splashed against his back.
“I’ll always remember you. And if you keep singing, I’ll always hear you. I’m sorry.”
You shook your head as he let you go. “You can’t…” He gave you a sad smile as he slowly moved away. “Please..” Tears continued down your cheeks. “I love you.”
You saw a tear drop off his chin and he slowly nodded, a soft smile lighting up his face. “I love you too.” Then he turned, dove under the water and was gone.
In a panic, you rushed further into the water. “Sam!” going under the water yourself, you opened your eyes, but you couldn’t see him. “Sam!” The sound was gargled as water filled your mouth and you looked everywhere for some sign of him. Coming back up, you gasped for air and cried, arms moving to keep you afloat. “Sam..” You cried softly.
He heard you cry out for him. He heard the sounds of water splashing as you rushed further into the water. But then, he heard you, loud and clear as you screamed for him underwater. His heart stopped, fear taking over. He knew he was far enough away that you couldn’t see him, but he could see you, the panicked look on your face as you searched for him. “Go up.” He begged quietly to himself. “Go up, go back up for air. You need to breath, go back up..”
He breathed a sigh of relief when you did, watched your hands and feet move to keep you afloat. “What are you doing here?” Sam turned, and his brother swam towards him. “I heard someone screaming your name, you were with her again, weren’t you. Is that her? You-”
“It’s over, Dean.” Sam mumbled.
“Sammy-”
“I just said goodbye.” He looked to his brother. “Happy?”
“Sam-” Dean’s normally strong and squared shoulders dropped.
“Just leave me alone, Dean.” Sam swam off.
Dean looked back up to the woman on the water, he could barely hear it, but her voice slowly picked up. She was singing again, the song, their song. He glanced towards his brother and he new his brother could hear her too. With a clenched jaw, Dean swam off, away from the sound of her voice.
It took weeks to find what you were looking for, but then you found it. Or rather, her. A witch who could do what you wanted, for a price. The price had been a favor, whenever she needed it. You had agreed, and then she gave you the small bottle and told you to return to the ocean.
So here you were, eyes closed, sitting on the rock in the middle of the water. The water lapped gently at your feet. Looking up at the stars just beginning to show, you opened the bottle. Taking one last deep breath, you drank the liquid inside, wincing at the taste.
You slid off the edge of the rock and into the water, the bottle slipping out of your hand as you began to go deeper. “I’ll see you soon, Sam.” You said quietly, a smile on your lips.
As you moved farther and farther from the sandy beach, the small bottle washed up along the shore.
You swam as best you could, but you had no idea where you were going.
It had taken a while to get use to swimming with a tail. A soft blue one, with hints of purple, which had surprised you. So far, you could move in a steady straight-ish line. Turning was difficult, going faster, impossible. But you kept at it, hoping, praying you would see someone, anyone, who could tell you where to find him. For all you knew, you were miles and miles in the wrong direction.
And then you spotted someone. “Hey!” It felt odd, it sounded odd, but there was some semblance of the voice you knew coming out of your mouth. “Please! Wait!” You did your best to hurry and catch up, your speed picking up slightly, but you struggled and fought to do it. “Please! I just need your help!”
That got his attention, and he turned. The green scales of his tail, hinted with brown and blue, were almost as brilliant as his green eyes. As you got closer, he looked at you confused. “Who are you?”
“I-” You could barely stop before bumping into him.
“Where the hell did you learn how to swim?” His hands had come out to stop you, and now fell away from your shoulders.
“Sorry.” You gave him a sad chuckle. “I’m new.”
“Sweetheart, no one’s new down here. Not at your age.” He chuckled.
“I- I’m looking for someone. His name is Sam.” His face darkened. “Do you know where I can find him?”
“What do you want with my brother? Who the hell are you?”
“Your- You’re Sam’s brother?” You smiled, hope filling you. “Where is he? I need to see him again.”
His jaw clenched. “You’re her?”
“Uh-” You were confused, but he nodded.
“Let’s go.” He growled out, grabbing your arm and dragging you along.
“Wait- I can barely swim- h-hang on!” You tried to get him to slow down, but he just sped up and pulled you along.
“Dean.” A man in an underwater cavern gave his head a nod. “Who have you brought me, and why?”
“Send for my father.” Dean told someone off to the side, who glanced to the man before you before swimming off. “This is her.” Dean practically shoved you. You looked up at the man before you, wondering who he was. “The human who took my brother from me.” He said it with such disgust that you glanced back at him.
“I-”
“Shut your mouth and don’t speak unless the king tells you to.” He growled at you before looking back up to the other man.
His eyes narrowed on you, taking you in. “John.” He said, without looking away from you. You turned and saw as a man, who looked similar to Sam in some ways, swam in. He eyed you before moving forward. “It seems we have found the human your youngest was smitten with, only she is no longer human.”
All eyes were on you. “Please.” You begged. “I need to see him, I- I love him.”
Dean let out a low growl, but he was cut off before he could say anything. “Go home, Dean.”
“Dad-”
“This doesn’t concern you.”
“He was my brother!” Dean screamed.
“And he was my son!” John yelled, turning to Dean. “He made his damn choice.” You could see so much pain in their faces. “I won’t lose both of you over this. Go home.”
“Why’d he have to teach her our fucking song?” Dean grumbled as he started out. “What’s so special about a fucking human, anyways?”
“He- he didn’t teach it to me.” Dean stopped and turned. “I heard it as a child, I don’t remember when, or where..”
“Not possible.” He growled.
“I swear! He heard me singing it, I sing it on the beach every morning as the sun comes up. That’s how I first saw him. I swear, he didn’t teach it to me.” You were pleading with them to believe you.
“Is it possible for a human to know our song, Crowley?” John asked, looking up to the king.
“Apparently it is.” His eyes were glued to you. “When did you first hear it, Love.”
“After my mother died.” You answered softly. “She- she drowned. I was really small, ran into the water thinking I could save her, but I couldn’t even swim yet.” You shook your head. “I don’t know when I heard it, or where.. I just- I remember waking up crying at night, and this song was running through my head. I’d softly sing it until I fell back asleep. I just assumed maybe it was something my mother had sang, or listened to..”
“Oh you poor child.” Crowley watched you.
“Dean, let’s go.” John lead Dean out.
“Oh god..” realization dawned on you. “It was sung to her as she died, wasn't it?” You looked up at the king and he nodded.
“I’m sorry. But I suppose I’m glad you both found comfort in my song.”
“Your song?”
He nodded. “I sang it as a boy, longing for my mother. A child’s longing to be loved and wanted. Comforted. Held.” He watched you take that in. “How did you turn?”
“A witch..” You answered softly. “I couldn’t live without him, so I found a way to not have to.”
“A wasted effort, I’m afraid.” You looked up, brow furrowed. “Sam is no longer among us. I’m sorry, Love.”
“W-what?”
“This witch.” He asked. “What did she look like?”
“Uh..” You felt sick, your heart ached. Sam was dead? “R-red hair. Long.” You tried to focus, tried to answer him. “Pale skin.. Heavy accent-”
“Mother.” It was half growl, half.. something else.
“Mother?” You looked up at him.
“I should have known.” He sat back against the back of the rock that had been smoothed out to look like a large chair, or throne, you guessed. “What did you give her? For this, favor.”
“A favor in return. When she asks for one.” He sighed. “He said it was his choice-”
He nodded. “Sam made up his mind.” He didn’t say more on the matter, he just thought quietly to himself.
“What do I do..?”
He took a deep breath, slowly letting it out. “You will live here, among us. You’ve not much choice. We will find someone to take you in. Teach you.” You gave him a small nod.
“Can I ask something?” You looked up and he nodded. “Your mother is human, but you are not… I’ve… I’ve heard stories.”
“Of a mother throwing her son into the ocean?” He was surprised when you nodded. “It’s true.” He answered softly. “She wanted to be rid of me. No one would take me, so she found a way to be rid of me. She didn’t know I had powers of my own, though.” He gave you a soft smile. “When people threw themselves into the depths, I offered them a new life instead of the watery grave they seeked. That is how this started.” He motioned with hands. “Hundreds of years down here, living, growing. New life being born.” He smiled. “I found some of what I lacked as a child.”
“Love.” He gave you a slight nod. “I found it down here too. In him..”
“I’m sorry.”
“Why are we taking her? She took Sammy!” Dean was yelling.
“Dean-”
“No!”
“Dean!” John yelled. “My decision is final.”
“This is bullshit.” Dean grumbled and swam away, leaving their home.
“I’m sorry.” John turned.
You shook your head. “I don’t blame him. I’m sorry too. Do you mind if I go for a swim?”
“Go on. Just be back by sunrise, okay?” You nodded and slowly left.
You were sitting on the rock, the one you had always sat on, and your tail splashed gently in the water. You let out a soft sigh, and began to sing. The song made sense now. It was more feeling than words, and you sang it from the heart.
Your voice carried, over the ocean, over the beach. Dean heard the song, and swam up to see. He saw you sitting there, the pain in your voice, the longing. He knew who you sang for, you sang for his brother. He closed his eyes, letting your voice melt away the anger for a moment. If what you said was true, if Sam had simply heard you singing and been drawn to you, he understood why. It was beautiful. It reminded him of when his mother had sang it when he was small.
You opened your eyes, and saw him floating not far off. When your voice stopped, he looked at you. “Please, keep singing. It’s beautiful.” He moved closer as your voice picked up again. You sang your heart out, and when you were done, when you sat there trying to stop from crying, he spoke again. “Now I see why Sammy fell in love with you.” Squeezing your eyes shut, you began to cry. Dean pulled you down off the rock and held you as the tears flowed. “I’m sorry. I just really miss my brother.”
“I’m sorry too.”
Dean took over teaching you everything he felt you needed to know. He kept you close to him, never letting you out of his sight, and John was glad to see the anger leaving his eldest son. And every night, you and Dean went to the surface, and you sang. John had followed once, wondering where you were going, and the way you sang their song almost had him tearing up.
Then one night, as you sat on your rock and sang, you suddenly heard a voice calling out to you. “Y/N!”
Turning, you saw him, running along the beach and into the water. “Sam?” Tears filed your eyes as he stumbled into the waves. “I- I thought.. Sam I thought you were dead..”
He grinned. “No, I made a deal. I couldn’t live without you so I made a deal with the king. He made me human.”
“Sam.. you shouldn’t have done that..”
He slowed down, brow furrowed. But when he got close enough, saw your tail, his eyes shot to yours. “You-”
“A witch.” You told him softly. “I couldn’t stand never seeing you again. Oh Sam..” He wrapped his arms around you, and you buried your face against his chest.
“Undo it. Come live up here with me. I’ve been looking everywhere for you.”
“I can’t.” You shook your head. “Favor for a favor, and only the one.”
“Go to the king, talk to Crowley, he-”
“He let me believe you were dead.” You looked up at him. “Everyone did.”
“Hey baby brother.”
Sam turned towards his brothers voice. “Dean? What are you doing here?”
“I thought you were dead.” You mumbled against his chest and cried.

For the longest time, Lucifer had lived on the small island all by himself. He enjoyed the silence and the solidarity a lot. One late afternoon, when he was going to the shore to enjoy the upcoming sunset, he suddenly noticed someone else on his island though. A young man sat on the stairs, his legs hidden by the water and apparently enjoying the perfect spot to bathe in the sun. Lucifer stopped as soon as he spotted him and held his breath to not make a sound. He had never seen another living soul in this place, much less such a stunning and utterly gorgeous young man.
Lucifer didn’t know how long he stood there and watched the man, fascinated by his pretty and youthful face and the elegant way he brushed his long, brunet hair over his shoulders. He was about to make an attempt to talk to him when he accidentally stepped on a small twig and broke it in half. Immediately the young man darted into the water, disappearing under the surface before Lucifer could even process what had happened. Lucifer was sad and shocked and despite knowing better he ran to the shore to see if he could spot the man anywhere. Apart from the soft waves and the sun reflecting on the water, however, the ocean was completely still.
He knew it was a little naive, but Lucifer came to the shore every day after that. Sometimes in the morning, sometimes in the evening - whenever he found the time he sat on the stone steps and waited for the mysterious young man to come back. He didn’t know why he was so fascinated by someone he didn’t know, but he was, he couldn’t deny it. And one morning, when he had almost lost hope already, his patience was rewarded.
At first, Lucifer didn’t see anything unusual, just a slightly more active ocean than the last days. Then, out of nowhere, he suddenly saw something dark coming out of the water, at the bottom of the stairs. For a moment the young man and Lucifer looked at each other in silence, before Lucifer quietly broke it.
“You came back,” he said with a slight smile. “I didn’t expect you to.”
“I’ve been watching you,” the young man said and pulled himself up onto the bottom step half-way. “You live alone here, don’t you?”
“I do, yes.” Lucifer raised a brow. “Do you plan to rob me or why are you asking?”
At this, the young man chuckled and shook his head with a smirk.
“I don’t want to rob you, don’t worry. I just wondered why you’d come back here every day, that’s all.”
“I waited for you to come back,” Lucifer admitted, blushing slightly. “I rarely have any visitors.”
“If you want to, I can visit you.” The young man’s smile brightened and Lucifer noticed how the sun reflected in his colorful eyes. It was impossible to tell if they were green or blue, but Lucifer didn’t care. They were mesmerizing. “My name is Sam.”
“I’m Lucifer and I would love to have you as my visitor.”
And Sam stayed true to his words. Every day he waited for Lucifer by the shore, sometimes bathing in the sun and sometimes swimming a little in the distance, but he was always there. He never came out of the water though, which confused Lucifer a little, so one day he couldn’t help but ask.
“Well, I can show you why I don’t leave the ocean,” Sam said and Lucifer noticed a hint of red on his face. “But you have to promise me that you won’t run away, okay?”
“Of course not!” Lucifer immediately replied, shocked that Sam would think like that. They were friends by now, why would he ever run away from a friend?
Sam took a deep breath and pulled himself up onto the stairs again, but this time more than just his upper body. At first, Lucifer didn’t understand, but then Sam moved a little and he saw the white, shimmering tail that replaced what he had expected to be legs. His jaw literally dropped when he saw the fin Sam was wiggling with slightly.
“I can’t really walk, I prefer to swim,” Sam said shy and looked up at the baffled man. “You’re not mad, are you?”
“Mad?” Lucifer huffed and shook his head a few times to make sure he wasn't dreaming. “Sam, you’re a mermaid? Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Merman, please,” Sam grinned and waved his tail. “And no, I’m not kidding you. I would’ve told you but... humans tend to hunt us and they are usually not as nice as you are. That’s why I fled when I noticed you the first time.”
“Sam, I won’t hunt you, alright. I’m just... wow...” Lucifer ran a hand through his hair and whistled through his teeth. “You look stunning!”
“You’re not... shocked?”
“You bet I’m shocked,” Lucifer laughed and came down to Sam’s level on the steps. “Shocked that I never thought about this. It won’t change anything between us though, I promise.”
“Lucifer... would you mind me doing something that would change things?” Sam asked suddenly and blushed even more than before. The color made his face look even more alive and vibrant.
“And what do you want to do?” Lucifer asked curiously, but Sam didn’t answer.
Instead of words, the merman leaned over to Lucifer and sealed his lips with his own. At first, the human was surprised by Sam’s kiss. He had expected anything, but not this. It didn’t last long though because Sam’s lips felt amazing against his own and after not more than a second Lucifer kissed the other back, the corners of his lips curling into a smirk. That was surely a nice and interesting way to change things between them.
ok so in the pagan god!cas & merman!dean AU can meg please be the witch in the woods that cas sometimes converses with? also i can definitely picture dean all blush-y in the market, in awe of all the human trinkets. which is of course a delight to all the shopkeepers to see this beautiful, half-clumsy freckled man dragging along the mysterious & intimidating stranger that lives in the small house on the beach. Also young merman!sam wanting to go on land to learn & read human books... love it
AHhhh!!!! It’s such a lovely idea! Yes, Meg can definitely be the witch living in the woods. And Sammy would be so in awe of Dean’s stories that he would tell him after returning to the say, and he would definitely want to experience it, too And people would so gossip about Cas and Dean. It’s a small town and it’s not like they have anything more interesting to talk about.
{ barriers to trans-dimensional travels: fantasy AU – merman!sam }
he’s not supposed to go to the surface, much less try to get close to humans--monsters, as his father used to call them--but Sam is curious. he wants to know what’s going on up there, why his father tries so hard to keep him (and everyone else) away from the quiet shores. simple answers had never satisfied him, after all. he’s always find a way to escape his father’s wary eyes.
fresh air is weird, and no matter how many times he swims up there, he seems to never get used to it. but it doesn’t stop him from exploring the silent, forgotten island. it’s empty almost all the time now. a long time ago, it was filled with different people: Little Ones and Tall Ones, as Sam used to call them. but now there’s nothing but some ruins and green everywhere.
but from time to time, someone will come to the island. the man will stay around for hours--days, sometimes, when the weather is good and his white huge thing is filled with food. Sam stays around, dares to touch the thing once or twice (and it’s hard and weird, rumbling under his touch as some wild animal would do) and then swims away. and sometimes, when he’s in a good mood and he knows his father isn’t around to scold him later, he allows the man to take a good, nice look at him before diving into deep waters and not showing up until the Tall One gives up and leaves.

You know what I want most on Supernatural right now?
A Charmed-esque episode where Sam accidently turns into a mermaid (merman) but instead of a fancy shiny scale bra he just wears his flannel shirt in the bathub where he’s stuck.
I basically just want merman!Sam chilling in a bubble bath, a glass of wine, and researching how to change back but he’s in no hurry.
And Dean is torn between exasperation and amusement, and takes some sneaky pics of Sam’s glorious tail for blackmail later.
