in this essay I will-
ACTUALLY EXPLAIN WHY THERE IS A BETTER MARKET FOR A MECH OR SCI-FI MMO RPG THAN THERE IS A FANTASY ONE!
For those who do not know what i'm talking about, Artix Entertainment is behind early internet darlings Adventure Quest, Dragonfable, Adventure Quest Worlds, Over Soul, Hero Smash, and Mech Quest.
I will NOT be going onto the lore or details of the games, they are needed for this. What you need to know is that the Big Ones for a time were Adventure Quest, Dragonfable, and Mech Quest. Two of these are indeed fantasy games where you play as a hero who starts as a mage, rouge, or warrior. Mech Quest, the outlier, was a Sci-Fi mech game where you played as a mech pilot. Additionally, of the three Mech Quest is canonically over.
Adventure Quest continues to this day with weekly updates, as does Dragonfable. Additionally a number of games came out of the company, including Adventure Quest Worlds (a 2D mmo) and Adventure Quest 3D (a 3D mmo).
Now, I won't go into why AQ3D isn't the greatest, other people have done that, because thats not the point.
the point is AQ3D entered the market of Fantasy Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games in 2016. games that also entered the Fantasy MMO RPG market include Rogalia, Pandum, Heroes of Shadow Guard, Albion Online, Everquest Next, and Black Desert Online. Games already in the market include World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy 14, Everquest, Runescape, The Lord of the Rings Online, Guild Wars 2, Elder Scrolls Online, Neverwinter, Orake, Maplestory, Aion, Blade and Soul, Ragnarok Online, Dungeons and Dragons Online (not neverwinter), Elsword Online, RIFT, Wizard101, Perfect World International, Asda 2/global, Atlantica Online, Soul Saver Online, Hero Plus, Aura Kingdom, Trove, Priston Tale.
Including AQ3D I listed 33 Fantasy MMORPGs. all of which came out during or before 2016. OBVIOUSLY there are more, I got the majority of those from a archive of MMORPGs.
Now lets look at the MMORPGs of the Science Fiction genre.
Ryzom (science fantasy) Skyforge, Necron, Elite Dangerous, Skyforge (science fantasy), Entropia Universe, Perpetuum*, Warframe, Anarchy Online, The Secret World (modern dark fantasy), Phantasy Star Online 2, eve online, starwars the old republic, planet side 2 and star trek online.
The following year, 2017, saw Star Citizen, and Secret World Legends.
It took me *hours* to find sci-fi mmorpgs. but *minutes* to find fantasy ones. and that one game, Perpetuum? it is the only one that is a Mech game.
In recent years mech game MMOs have appeared, but none of them were also RPGs.
and the thing is. Mech Quest has the potential. Mech Quest's story is over, it's universe is gone, but that hasn't stopped AE from making more games.
AE had the opportunity to break into the *MECH* Sci-Fi or Science Fantasy MMO RPG market and instead made another generic fantasy MMO RPG. and the thing that pisses me off is the fact that they thought about it.
I should buy a Star Captain account for Mechquest and actually do the full story because there's so much pre-reset stuff in the other Artix Entertainment games and its All Greek To Me
